Softball Drops Two at Georgetown to Split Series

GEORGETOWN, Ky.-- Cumberland softball splits the series at Georgetown with two losses this afternoon. Despite yesterday's successes, the Phoenix settle for a split as Georgetown got up early in both games and maintained the advantage throughout.

Game one saw a quiet first inning, with both teams unable to score despite some early hits.

Georgetown struck first in the second inning, with Ella Forish starting things off with a single to right field. Kylee West kept the momentum going with a single to third base and advancing to second on a throw, moving Forish to third. With runners on second and third, Destiny Wallace hit into a fielder's choice, allowing West to score for a 1-0 lead.

At the top of the third inning, the Phoenix looked to rally back. Peach started things off with a single to left field, but the momentum was short-lived as it would be the team's sole hit of the inning.

Georgetown added another run to their lead at the bottom, with Barnett leading off with a single to left field and advancing to second on Lucas' sacrifice bunt.

Barnett then stole third base to be in scoring position. Shepherd used this opportunity, singling to second base and bringing Barnett home for another run.

Once again, the Phoenix managed just one hit in the fourth and failed to score off of it. Georgetown, however, added two more runs on two hits to extend their lead 4-0.

After quiet fifth and sixth innings, Cumberland showed signs of life in the seventh, with a loaded bases opportunity. Sara Brogdon was hit by a pitch, advancing to first base, and Brylee Bartley reached first on an error by the pitcher, allowing Brogdon to advance to second. Arnemann grounded out to first base, advancing Bartley to third and Brogdon to second. Lay followed with a single to shortstop, bringing Bartley home for Cumberland's first run of the game. Lay then stole second base to be in scoring position. Evans walked to load the bases, but Cumberland couldn't capitalize on the chance, ending game one in Georgetown's favor.

In the second game, Cumberland came out strong in the first inning. Anna Lay started with a single to center field, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Evans. Abby Chappell followed up with a single to center field, advancing Lay to third. Chappell then stole second base, and Kenzie France grounded out to first base, bringing Lay home for the first run of the game.

Georgetown quickly responded in the bottom of the first. Barnett was hit by a pitch, and Lucas singled to shortstop, putting two runners on. Shepherd's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third. Alanna Pierce then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Barnett to score and tying the game at 1-1. Forish followed this up with a single to left center, bringing Lucas home and giving Georgetown a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers maintained their lead from that inning on, adding to their score in the bottom of the second after Cumberland's scoreless top half. They capitalized on two hits, scoring three runs and extending their lead to four as they entered the third inning.

After a quiet third consisting of hits from Lay and Georgetown's Forish but no runners being brought in, the Tigers finished the fourth with three hits and a run. Ainsley Herron singled to second base and stole second, putting herself in scoring position. Shepherd then doubled to right field, bringing Herron home for a run. Pierce followed with a single to center field, but Cumberland stopped the bleeding by throwing Shepherd out at home.

In the fifth, Cumberland started to chip away at Georgetown's lead. Arnemann reached first on an error by the first baseman, and Lay singled to left field, sending Arnemann to second. Both runners then advanced on a wild pitch. Next, Evans grounded out to first base, but Arnemann scored on the play due to an error, narrowing the gap to 6-2.

At the bottom, Carly Clinnard stepped up and forced three straight outs to keep the game within four runs.

Cumberland tried to rally further in the fifth starting with Barley's single to left field. Peach was then hit by a pitch, advancing Bartley to second. Arnemann then grounded out to second base, advancing both runners. However, Cumberland couldn't capitalize as Lay grounded out to shortstop, leaving both runners stranded.
Georgetown continued to build as Lucas brought Wallace home with a single to left field, extending their lead to 7-2.

Cumberland made a final effort to recover the score at the top of the seventh, with Evans leading off and reaching first base on an error by the second baseman and advancing to second. Chappell then lined out to center field, allowing Evans to advance to third. France made a crucial double to left center, bringing Evans home to make the score 7-3.

However, Cumberland couldn't sustain the rally and their runs would end there, allowing Georgetown to split the series.

The Phoenix will be back at Billy Ross Dee Stadium on Tuesday, April 9 for two big games against No. 9 George Gwinnett.
