Cumberland Softball Eliminates Bethel from MSC Championship; Set to Take on Campbellsville

Bowling Green, Ky. - - Cumberland softball rode a big first two innings to victory in the opening round of the MSC Championship, taking down the 7-seeded Bethel Wildcats 14-8.

Bethel was able to break up the no-hitter in the first inning with a single to shallow center field, but Kaitlin Higgins and company kept the Wildcats off the scoresheet. Starting the game how they ended their season series with Bethel, the Phoenix had their feet on the pedal.

Anna Lay walked and Ashley Evans hit a great bunt to put two runners on with no outs, setting up what would become a great first inning. After an Abby Chappell sac bunt, Cumberland went 3-3 over their next three batters, scoring four runs over the course of the inning.

Higgins continued to do her thing in the second inning, shutting out the Wildcats on the basepath, helping to keep the momentum on the side of the Phoenix. If the first inning wasn't enough, the second inning was broken wide open by Cumberland as they put together a seven run frame to lead 11-0.

Gracie Arnemann led off the inning by reaching first base and was aided by an error from the first baseman, getting over to second base in the process. Another staple Anna Lay bunt put runners on the corners and after recording one out the Phoenix were looking to do damage.

Abby Chappell walked to load the bases and a miscue from the pitcher to first base meant that Jacey Hatfield was able to stretch an infield single into a three-run scoring knock. Again though, the Phoenix were not done scoring as Sara Brogdon took their pitcher deep to center field on the first pitch, scoring herself and Hatfield.

The inning could not seem to end fast enough for the Wildcats, with Karsyn France walking to set up both Abbie Peach and Gracie Arnemann with RBI doubles. By the end of the inning Cumberland recorded six hits and only left one runner on base.

Bethel may have been down but they were not out yet though, getting back four runs in the top of the third. Three errors in the inning did little favors for the Phoenix but their strong front two helped to steady the ship, leading 11-4 after three full innings of play.

The seven seed mounted another charge in the top of the following frame, stringing together three hits to score three runs. Annalee Moore came in to relieve Higgins after the Wildcats started to find their rhythm against her and she got the Phoenix out of the inning, 11-7.

Hatfield and Brogdon kept up their perfect day in the bottom of the fourth, beginning with the latter hitting a single to leadoff the inning and another hit-error combination gave Brogdon her fourth RBI of the game. Karsyn France then walked and Brogdon stole third, again putting runners on the corners.

The Wildcats got themselves out of the jam with a double play; it was not before Abbie Peach could hit a deep sac fly to score Brogdon and extend the gap further, though. Annalee Moore kept Bethel off of the scorecard in the fifth, allowing just one hit.
In the bottom of the inning Cumberland added more run support, starting with Ashley Evans taking a pitch to the thigh, along with first base. From there Kenzie France hit a single to center field to put two on with two outs, giving who else but Jacey Hatfield the chance to drive in another runner.

The Second Team All-Conference shortstop continued to put together what was quite possibly her best game in a Phoenix uniform, recording a single to put her at 4-4 on the day, and add another RBI. With seven runs in between them, the Phoenix looked to cruise their lead into the next round.

Both sides kept a clean frame in the sixth, the first of the game, and it meant that Moore and the Phoenix defense needed just three more outs to advance. Although the Wildcats fought hard, scoring a run in the inning, Cumberland pulled out the victory in the end, 14-8.

Getting themselves out of the elimination game, the Phoenix will now be in the full bracket, taking on Third-seeded Campbellsville at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. The winner of that game will advance to face No. 2 seed Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) (28-16, 15-9) at 6:30 p.m. CT.
