Phoenix Drop Opening Round Matchup to Tigers; Await Opponent in Consolation Bracket

Bowling Green, Ky, - - The Cumberland softball team held strong for five innings but could not stop the Tigers offense, falling 8-1 to the tournament's no. three-seed.

After a massive first inning to kick off their first elimination game the day before, both the Phoenix and the Tigers got on base but could not score in the opening frame. Like yesterday though, Cumberland found their breakthrough first.

Kenzie France walked to leadoff the inning and Jacey Hatfield was able to reach base from an error by the first baseman. Despite the next batter popping up, Karsyn France then reached on a fielder's choice and an errant throw from the second baseman gave both France and Hatfield a chance to advance, also scoring Kenzie to take an early lead.

Campbellsville challenged in the bottom of the inning with two hits, but Higgins was able to shut them out until they finally broke their goose egg in the bottom of the third. A leadoff single and wild pitch combined to put a runner on second with no outs, before a double would push across the tying run.

The innings kept ticking by with neither team able to break the deadlock; coming into the bottom of the fifth though the Tigers were able to jump ahead. Slapping a triple into right field, Campbellsville's leadoff runner was able to score after a Cumberland error while throwing to the infield.

Higgins again helped to steady the ship, allowing two more runners to get on base, but then forced a pop up and a great double play ball to escape with minimal damage. The Phoenix were again toothless in the top of the sixth, while the Tigers looked to be on a mission.

Campbellsville recorded a single and a double to start the inning, though it would not matter where they were at as the Tigers centerfielder hit a three run bomb to widen the gap further. Higgins forced two groundouts to France at third base and it looked as though the inning might be coming to a close, but the three-seed had other ideas.

A two out rally saw back-to-back doubles and a pair of singles take the Tigers lead from 5-1, all the way to 8-1. Cumberland only had one more inning to make something happen before the game came to a close, and despite being gifted an error and grabbing a hit in the inning, the Phoenix would fall.

Cumberland will now play in the consolation bracket where every game is single elimination; awaiting the loser of one-seeded Cumberlands and five-seeded Lindsey Wilson. First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM on Friday.
