Women's Volleyball drop two on the final day of Phoenix Classic

LEBANON, Tenn.-- Cumberland Women's Volleyball drops final two matches against Missouri Valley University and Blue Mountain Christian University to close out the Phoenix Classic.


Cumberland dropped their first match of the day to Missouri Valley after taking the first set of the match. The Vikings regrouped to get a 25-20 win in set two, 25-18 win in set three, and closed the match with a 25-16 fourth set victory. 

The Phoenix hit .109 in this match posting 38 kills and 22 attack errors. The Phoenix went even with eight aces and eight service errors. CU picked up three solo blocks and eight assisted blocks in the match. 

Individually, Hazel Konkel finished with a team-high 12 kills hitting .267. Haley Mitchell picked up nine kills. Emma Chavers picked up 15 assists and 13 digs for a double-double. Elaine Shaneyfelt and Morgan Snead each had double-figure digs with 13 and 11. 

Ana Oro and Ksenija Simun led the Vikings in the match. Both Oro and Simun picked up double-doubles as Oro posted 18 kills and 17 digs and Simun finished with 19 kills and 16 digs. Libero Ana Franco had 23 digs to lead the effort defensively. 

Trailing 3-2 in the early going of set one, the Phoenix went on a 4-0 run sparked by a kill from Morgan Snead. Leading 8-6, Missouri Valley picked up three straight points to grab the lead before CU tied it back. Tied at 15-15, Missouri Valley picked up two straight kills to take the lead before Cumberland took over the set with a 5-0 run. The Vikings made a run at the end, but Mitchell finished the set off with a kill. 

Cumberland started the second set with a lot of momentum leading 5-1. The Phoenix extended that to 9-4. Missouri Valley fought back to trail by one at 12-11, but Cumberland again extended the lead with a 3-0 spurt. The Vikings rallied to tie the game at 18-18 before closing the set with a 7-2 run. 

Missouri Valley stayed hot in the third jumping out to an 8-1 lead on 6-0 run. The Phoenix cut it to three down 12-9, but the Viking kept the throttle down getting back up by five before winning the set 25-18. 

The Phoenix responded in the fourth early trying to send it to the fifth. Cumberland lost the first point of the set before rattling off six-straight points. However, the Vikings bounced back with a 5-1 run to get down 7-6. Cumberland would go on to push the lead out to 12-8, but Missouri Valley went on a 6-0 run to take the lead at 14-12. Cumberland scored the next two points to tie it, but five-straight points by Missouri Valley and extended that to a 10-2 run to close the match out. 

 The Phoenix played in the last match of the night against the Blue Mountain Christian Topper's who are receiving votes to close out the Phoenix Classic. The Topper's of Blue Mountain Christian started off hot in set one pulling away from the Phoenix 18-11. Cumberland made a hard-fought comeback down seven to bring it back to 19-16 before the Topper's called a timeout. After the timeout the Topper's went on to win set one 25-19. Four Phoenix combined for a total of eight kills in set one. 

Set two went back and forth until the Topper's pulled away 15-9 followed by a Phoenix timeout. The Topper's kill ratio Later in the set the Topper's of Blue Mountain got hot and went on a 10-1 to win set two at a score of 25-10. 

The Topper's started set three hot going on a 5-0 run to start the set. The Phoenix battled back through the midst of the set to bring it back within three points at 15-12 BMCU, but the Topper's hitting percentage kept us away. The Topper's went on a 10-2 run to finish up the Phoenix Classic and win 3-0 by a score of 25-14. 

Alei Roper led the Phoenix tonight with six kills while Cumberland as a team had seven players combine for 22 kills. Elaine Shaneyfelt led in the dig column tallying up 12 while the team combined for 41. The Phoenix also rotated through all of their setters highlighting Emma Chavers with nine assists.

The Phoenix travel next week to play in the Alamo City Vollyesta in San Antonio, Texas. They will take on RV Nelson University and No. 3 Eastern Oregon University on Friday. Saturday the Phoenix will take on Oklahoma Christian University and Our Lady of the Lake.
