Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Phoenix Fall to Nelson and #3 Eastern Oregon on Day One of Volleyesta Tournament

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - - Cumberland Women's Volleyball drop two on their first day of the Alamo City Volleyesta, not finding a way through either Nelson or Eastern Oregon.

The Phoenix lost the first match of the tournament to RV Nelson in four sets. On the match, the Phoenix posted 52 kills hitting .208. CU had just two blocks in the match where their counterparts picked up nine blocks.

Hazel Konkel led the way in kills with 12 hitting .500 on the match. Paulina Dziedzic, Haley Mitchell, and Alei Roper each added nine a piece. Emma Chavers picked up 22 assists and libero Elaine Shaneyfelt had 14 digs.

Nelson hit .286 on the match and did a great job on the nets with, as was mentioned before, nine blocks. The Lions had 12 aces to go along with that.

Alexandra Bonnett picked up 11 kills and hit .417 while Lilly Hanna had nine and hit .500. Cassidy Hargesheimer and Taylor Cavazos combined for 31 assists. Tessa Glick picked up 10 digs defensively.

Cumberland rattled off the first two points of the match en route to an early 4-1 lead, but the Lions would go on a huge 9-1 run to go up 10-5. After trading points to 12-7, Cumberland would go on a 6-2 spurt to bring the game back within two at 15-13 forcing Nelson into a timeout. The Lions came out of the timeout and built their lead to 20-16 before three straight points on a kill from Sydney Andrews, an ace from Emma Chavers, and an attack error by Nelson brought it back to a one-point match. Nelson however would close out the first set with three kills to go up 1-0, 25-22.

Cumberland again built an early lead up 5-2 quickly in the second. Nelson rallied back to tie the match at 7-7. Later tied at 10-10, three-straight attack errors by Cumberland and an ace put the Lions up by four. Cumberland answered with a 5-2 spurt to get back down by one at 16-15. Nelson would then go on a 6-0 run to get up 22-15 before winning the second set 25-18.

The Phoenix jumped out 7-3 in the third set and never looked back. The four-point margin at this point was as close as the Lions would get in the set. Cumberland pushed it out to a 10-4 lead after two errors from Nelson. Three-consecutive kills from Alei Roper and Paulina Dziedzic made it 14-6. The Phoenix ballooned the lead to 22-13 after a 5-1 spurt. Nelson made a run late, but Cumberland wound up winning the set 25-19.

The fourth set was the only set that Nelson grabbed the lead early, going up 5-2 after seven points. The Lions pushed that out to 12-4. Cumberland went on a 5-2 run with kills from Roper, Hazel Konkel, and Dziedzic on the stretch to get back within four. The Phoenix would cut it to down just one at 19-18, but Nelson would end the game with a 6-2 run.

The following game looked like a daunting task on paper as the Phoenix had to find a way past the number three team in the nation, Eastern Oregon. EOU looked the real deal early on, winning eight of the first nine points and only dropping one on a service error. Finally breaking the run Hazel Konkel was able to smash a ball off the Mountaineer block for a point, though the Phoenix still had a mountain to climb. A twenty ball rally won by a Haley Mitchell block again looked like a catalyst for a Cumberland run, seeing the Phoenix win four of the next five points.

With a lead as high as eight points Cumberland looked to the pair of Haley Mitchell and Lila Cade on the left side, as 12 of their 25 attacks came by way of those two, including five of the seven team kills. EUO would widen their lead, hitting nearly 50%, and finish the set 25-10.

Flipping the script, the Phoenix won the first point of set two and managed to push the Mountaineers more so than the first.Oregon went on a run but a comeback effort came through the efforts of a service ace on the part of Emma Chavers. Stopping the bleeding, Cumberland went on a quick three point run to draw the match to a single point and Chavers continued to soar in the middle with seven assists and five digs as the second set sat at 15-13.

In a game of runs Cumberland found themselves on the cusp of breaking that two point deficit and the rest of the set was defined by that. The Phoenix's final charge came from an Alei Roper kill, making the set 22-20 but the Mountaineers again pulled away, 25-21.

The third set was the tightest from end to end as Cumberland also maintained their biggest lead of the match. Sydnee Tidwell came in and won back to back points on her serve to swing the momentum CU's way. She was then backed up by the freshman pair of Alei Roper and Lila Cade grabbing a pair of kills from the outside to draw the Phoenix to an 11-8 lead, forcing an Eastern Oregon timeout.

Serve and receive was Cumberland's bread and butter the whole set and after trailing by double digits just two sets ago, the unranked Phoenix were up 15-8 over the highly touted Mountaineers. Although CU looked more confident than they had the whole match, Eastern Oregon wasn't going to go away easily, clawing their way back to make it 18-18. Despite the Phoenix's best effort they wouldn't be able to find any more points past their set two score, falling 25-21.

Cumberland fell 12 points shy of the Mountaineers in their three set loss, registering 26 kills, led by a three way tie between Konkle, Cade, and Mitchell, all with six each. Phoenix libero Elaine Shaneyfelt was key for the side all day long, recording 12 digs and a game high four aces. Also recording a near double-double was Chavers who had eight digs to go along with 14 assists.

The Phoenix will play the final two matches of their weekend campaign tomorrow against Oklahoma Christian at noon and wrap up the tournament against hosts OLLU at 5 PM.
