Women's Volleyball Return Home with Pair of Victories at Alamo City Volleyesta

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - - The Cumberland Women's volleyball team dropped just one set on day two of the Alamo City Volleyesta as they took down Oklahoma City to start the day and then swept hosts Our Lady of the Lake in three sets.

Grabbing their first win of the tournament, Cumberland were led by Emma Chavers who registered her second double-double of the year with a game high 17 assists and 13 digs. Elsewhere, Haley Mitchell was a model of consistency in front of the net with another game high, that being 12 kills.

The Phoenix had three players who were all one kill shy of triple digits, as Hazel Konkel, Hailey Jones, and Lila Cade all recorded nine each. The pair of Manoella Gomes and Elaine Shaneyfelt both were also key for CU, with the senior libero recording a team-leading 18 digs while the latter assisted 15 attacks.

Both Grace Smallwood and Rylee Steward of OCU were a kill short of double digits, while Jaiden Downey was clear and away their leader in assists with 16. The matches leader in digs also starred for Oklahoma; keeping the Stars in a number of points, Joeci Hunt recorded 22 digs.

Through seven points the Phoenix had yet to find a kill but had grabbed a 4-3 lead from three straight Stars service errors. Oklahoma City calmed their nerves and attacked the Phoenix clinically, putting away five of their nine attacks. Morgan Snead came in after yet another OCU service error and pulled the match back to just a two point gap, as the Phoenix eyed the lead down.

OCU pulled to their biggest lead of the set at 15-10 but the Phoenix's block came in clutch, forcing three straight attacking errors, with a pair of blocks coming from Manoella Gomes and Haley Mitchel making it 15-13. During that eight point run CU registered two aces, two kills, and four blocks to pull ahead 18-15. The Stars attempted a comeback but Cumberland pulled the set out in style, going on a 25-22 set victory.

The Stars had a lead for most of the second set, pulling away after a string of service errors from both teams. Cumberland had several rallying calls with seven kills through their first 15 attempts, but every time the Phoenix began to pull the match back OCU had an answer. Lila Cade grabbed three straight kill lates in the set when it looked like it might have been over, making it a 24-23 game, but OCU took it the following point.

Grabbing a lead to begin the set, Cumberland didn't look back while on their way to a 10-4 lead. Alei Roper grabbed her fourth kill of the game and gave Cumberland their biggest lead of the set, going ahead 11-4. The Stars rallied several times to bring the lead back down to three or four, the Phoenix however flipped the script from the previous set and answered every OCU question. Doing great work in the set, Emma Chavers was a difference maker as she recorded the Phoenix's only double-double to that point, rivaled only by teammate Elaine Shaneyfelt in digs and Manoella Gomes in assists. Putting a stamp on the set, Hazel Konkel hit through the Stars block and put CU ahead two sets to one.

After a slow start to the match for her standards Konkel began to link up with Gomes, hitting three kills on four attacks as Cumberland went ahead early again. Neither team was able to win more than two points in a row until Cumberland got in their groove and rattled off four straight points to put all the pressure on the trailing Stars, with the score at 15-11. Matching the Phoenix's energy, the Stars were able to bring the fourth set to a single point of difference but the match leader in kills, Haley Mitchell, was the difference.

Mitchell's eleventh kill of the match put Cumberland within one point of their second victory and she took matters into her own hands, adding one more to her total on the day, as well as another victory for the Phoenix.

The second match of the day came against the host school, Our Lady of the Lake University, and the Phoenix put the home side on their heels quickly. Elaine Shaneyfelt was glued behind the service line as Cumberland scored eight straight points to open the first set. OLLU finally put out the Phoenix's fire and fought their way back into the match, though Cumberland kept ahold of that lead and forced another Saints at 13-5. Coming out of the timeout everything stayed the way of CU with two aces and a Hailey Jones block to widen the lead to ten.

A four point swing to the Saints shifted the match momentarily but that gap would remain till the end of the set as the Phoenix took the opening frame 25-16. Cumberland opened the second like they did the first, pulling away 5-1, the Saints however didn't let their deficit balloon like the previous match. Getting as close as 9-7 for the away side, OLLU couldn't stop the Phoenix from pulling away yet again as they won eight of the following ten points to make it 18-9. Like she did all day, Haley Mitchell took care of business again and ended the second set with her seventh kill of the match.

Keeping the trend of hot starts Cumberland again jumped out early 7-2, aided by a pair of both blocks and kills from Konkel. The Saints continued to fight their way into the match when the Phoenix looked to pull away but Cumberland's attack was firing on all cylinders, grabbing kills for fun and setting up blocks that couldn't be hit through. Despite OLLU's best efforts to grab a set, Elaine Shaneyfelt wrapped the game up just like she started it, winning 25-19 on an ace.

Cumberland managed just one double digit player in the three major categories, all of which led the match; Chavers with 13 assists, Shaneyfelt with 15 digs, and Mitchell with 10 kills.

Our Lady of the Lake struggled to attack all game long, swinging just 20 kills to the Phoenix's 33 and recorded one more attacking error than they did kills, hitting a negative percentage.

Cumberland will play again this coming Wednesday in a tri-match against both UNOH and Bryan College in Dayton, Ohio, first at 4:30 PM then at 7:00.
