Women's Volleyball Take Two Wins at Bryan College Trimatch

DAYTON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Women's Volleyball team took victories in both matches as they took part in a trimatch against Bryan College and UNOH.

Cumberland began the match all over the University of Northeastern Ohio, going ahead 5-0 before UNOH could ever serve. In a game of runs however, it was the Racers who found their rhythm at the right time, going on an eight point run of their own to take a 17-13 lead. Each team traded pairs of points at a time but Cumberland never found the big run that they needed, dropping the first set 25-20.

The second set was much tighter than the first with neither team being able to pull ahead by more than two points for the bulk of the set, while the largest lead was just three points in favor of the Phoenix. Again finding themselves in a battle of runs, it was a pair of kills from newcomers Hailey Jones and Sydney Andrews who were the difference in the set. Despite pulling it back to a 25-25 set score, CU were able to pull out a narrow 27-25 victory.

In the third set the Phoenix came out on the backfoot again as the Racers were able to maintain a small lead through about half of the frame. After trailing by three points, Lila Cade shifted the momentum to Cumberland with a massive kill from the left side. Her swing propelled CU to an eight point run, seeing the Phoenix grab three kills and three aces to take a lead they would never relinquish, winning the set 25-20.

Despite the first set going the way of the Racers, Cumberland had their sights set on victory. The set had five different three-point swings where it looked like it could be anyone's game, the Phoenix though were on the better end of a two point bounce when it mattered the most. As the game drew near to a close it was 22-22, but Cumberland would close out game one in fashion; slamming a Haley Mitchell kill through the UNOH block, 25-23.

Konkel led Cumberland offensively with 12 kills on an impressive 50% attacking percentage while Emma Chavers and Manoella Gomes were spectacular, combining for 36 assists between the two of them. Elaine Shaneyfelt was also just shy of a match lead in digs, getting to 21.

After grabbing a win to start the day the Phoenix were all over hosts Bryan College, going up 10-3 to start the match. Hazel Konkel was named MSC Defender of the Week on Monday and kept her hot streak going, swinging five kills and blocking three more Lion attacks as the Phoenix went on to take the first set 25-15.

Another hot start to the second set by the Phoenix was quickly slowed down by a five point run from the Lions, pulling ahead 8-7, only being stopped by yet another Konkel kill. The bleeding didn't stop for long though seeing the Lions force four straight Cumberland errors to pull back ahead by four points. Just as the set started to look like the Lions would pull away Emma Chavers and Haley Mitchell linked up for two kills in three points, including a Chavers ace.

The set continued to go back and forth as the two teams traded points; Cumberland living at the net and dying at the net as they managed 11 kills from 16 points, but 12 attack errors as well. Ultimately the Phoenix were able to double the Lions kill total but the home side was the more clinical team in the set, evening things up after a 25-20 victory.

Unlike the first two sets of this match, neither team was able to pull away by many points, locking horns at 6-6, 14-14, and then 19-19. Cumberland were finally able to find a small run after that third congression, feeding off energy from back to back Sydney Andrews kills. That three point run put CU ahead 22-19 and forced a Bryan timeout. Freshman Lila Cade stepped up to put the nail in the coffin, adding two kills to push the Phoenix ahead 25-19.

Cumberland kept their foot on the gas and after ten points of play CU found themselves ahead 8-2. As was mentioned earlier, Konkel was named MSC Defender of the Week and in this game she formed a block with Haley Mitchell, Hailey Jones, and Lila Cade that the Lions had little to no answer to. Konkel led the way with five blocks through 16 points in the fourth set while each of the other three had four blocks. Taking their second victory of the day, Bryleigh Yarbrough rounded out the fourth set with an ace, 25-18.

The Phoenix attack was something to marvel at this match, managing 53 kills on 49 assists. Konkel had the same number of kills as the Lions top two players combined, 15, while Cade (12) and Mitchell (11) were both in double digits. Chavers and Gomes matched their efforts from the first game nearly to a tee, with 20 assists in back-to-back games for the sophomore from Alabama and another 15 assist performance for the Brazil native.

Despite the fruitful attack the Phoenix's defending was just as brilliant, registering a staggering 19 blocks, as well as distributing 57 digs throughout the lineup. Credit also must go to Chavers who recorded six of Cumberland's ten service aces.

The Phoenix will have little rest before they are back in action, taking part in the Emileigh Jo Cooper Memorial Classic on Friday, hosted by the University of Rio Grande. Cumberland will play former conference rivals Shawnee State first at 5:00 PM, then face off against hosts Rio following that match.
