Rubio's Brace Helps Push the Phoenix to 2-0 Start

LEBANON, Tenn.--Diego Rubio's brace helps the Phoenix move to 2-0 with a 5-0 win over Northwestern Ohio to start the Red Storm Classic.

Rubio had the game of a lifetime for a centerback knocking in two goals for the Phoenix including an early contender for goal of the year. Brima Kamara and Marco Madrono each scored a goal and newcomer Rune Petersen had a goal and an assist in the win.

The Phoenix controlled the game from the start as outshot the Racers 26-8 in the match including 16 shots on goal. Cumberland created opportunities time and time again which led to the score ballooning to 5-0.

Cumberland keeper George Irons was tested a couple times in the match, but stood strong in goal posting the first Cumberland clean sheet of the season. He faced four shots making all four saves.

Cumberland controlled the pace of the game early on, but were unlucky in several chances. Victor Ramirez fired a shot on target early that UNOH keeper Jack Cook punched over the crossbar. In the 16th minute, the Phoenix did a great job passing the ball around the box and found Phillip Schmidtke for a shot on target that was again saved.

Cumberland finally broke paydirt when the ball was played across the box and newcomer Rune Petersen headed back to Brima Kamara who beat the keeper to break the tie in the 33rd minute.

From that point on, the Phoenix began rolling. Cumberland added a goal from Diego Rubio in the 40th minute as Rubio stole it away outside of the box and fired a shot to the upper 90 for the 2-0 lead.

With less than 10 seconds to play in the half, the Phoenix extended the lead to 3-0. Robbie Lyons dished it across the box to a streaking Marco Madrono for the goal and a big lead at the break.

Early in the second half, Rubio scored his second goal, quickly emerging as a contender for goal of the year. After a corner kick from the Phoenix, Lyons sent the ball into the box. The UNOH keeper managed to punch it away, but it rebounded to the opposite side, where Rubio executed a bicycle kick to find the back of the net.

The Phoenix continued to pressure the Racers for the remaining 40 minutes. The Phoenix added a late insurance goal from Petersen as he scored in the 84th minute off an assist from Ramirez.

Cumberland will have a big match on Saturday to round out the Red Storm Classic as they take on the 19th-ranked and host team Rio Grande. The match will kick off at 10:00 a.m. central time.
