Phoenix Shutout No. 19 Rio Grande in 2-0 Win

RIO GRANDE, Ohio--Cumberland takes down No. 19 Rio Grande with a 2-0 clean sheet to end the Red Storm Classic with two wins.

The Phoenix improved to 3-0-0 with their first ranked win of the season. The Phoenix scored early on a corner kick as Abdul Kadir scored the game-winner and then Cumberland held off the Rio Grande attack to get the win.

Rio Grande fired 24 shots, but only managed to keep five on frame which CU keeper George Irons stopped all of them for his second clean sheet of the season.

Cumberland took 15 shots in the match with eight of them on target. The Phoenix had 10 corner kicks to Rio Grande's six. It was a physical battle that led to a combined 33 fouls with the Phoenix picking up five yellows in the match.

Both teams had early chances on set pieces in the first 10 minutes. Rio Grande had a crack at it first and George Irons made the first save of the match. Minutes later, Robbie Lyons had a crack at goal on a free kick outside the box that Matheus de Campos saved.

Cumberland found the back of the net in the 23rd minute to grab the lead. It was the Phoenix's third corner in a minute span and Marcos Perez placed the ball on a low line at the back post. Rio Grande committed to getting on the near post, but the ball sailed past everyone on the front side and Abdul Kadir was there on the back end to punch in for the lead.

The best chance in the rest of the first half went to Rio Grande. The Red Storm had numbers and Rafael Kawata took a shot that beat Irons, but Diego Rubio was there to deflect before Donaldson headed it over the goal. The Phoenix fended off four shots and three corners in the final 10 minutes of the half to take the lead into the break.

The Red Storm had a couple more good looks coming out half. The first came on a cross across the box that Kawata headed right. The next came on a free kick from just outside the 18 that Marti Puigsegur Calv sent high over the crossbar. One more came after a Phoenix corner on a counter, Rio Grande had numbers and gave themselves a one-on-one chance between Joe McInnes and Irons. The CU keeper made the stop to keep the score at 1-0.

Cumberland extended the lead in the 63rd minute. Philipp Schmidtke made a great run across the middle of the field and then finished past the keeper for the 2-0 lead.

The Phoenix made it very difficult the last 27 minutes for Rio Grande to get any great looks and held off the Red Storm to get the 2-0 clean sheet.

Cumberland is back in action on Saturday, August 31 against Thomas University. Kick off is set for noon central time.
