Kamara Rescues Phoenix With 89th Minute Goal Against Night Hawks

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland Men's Soccer remain undefeated after a last minute goal from Brima Kamara, taking down (RV) Thomas University 1-0.

Off the backs of an upset victory over the former 19th ranked Redstorm, Cumberland found themselves in a battle with the Night Hawks. Thomas looked the better side through the opening parts of the first half, keeping up a press that looked near impossible to continue at the rate at which they were sending players forward.

The first three shots of the game all went to TU, keeping the Phoenix in their third of the field and on the backfoot. It wasn't until the 31st minute of the game whenever Harold Perea took a shot that the Phoenix would register an attempt on goal, a figure that quickly grew as time went on. Again just six minutes later it was super-sub Victor Ramirez who forced another save, going on a great run down the left side and placing a shot at the near post.

Going into the half Cumberland finally looked to be finding their rhythm in the match, though the game was 0-0 at the break.

Starting the second half much better than the second, Jorge Gonzalez was forced to make two saves in the opening ten minutes and his heroics would not stop there. Running onto a ball over the top, Jostin Angel was eventually brought down just inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot for a Cumberland penalty kick.

With a plethora of options in the squad to pick from it was the senior forward from Spain, Marcos Perez, who stepped up to the spot. The aforementioned Gonzalez did as great goalkeepers do, making an excellent dive to his left side, stopping an attempt from Perez to keep the game 0-0.

For another ten minutes the Phoenix were all over the Night Hawks despite the momentum looking to change back to TU. Finally recording their first shot on frame of the half, Thomas forced a save from George Irons in the 73rd minute. Time continued to tick by with the Phoenix registering shot after shot, but always lacking that end product against the flying Spaniard in net.

In the dying embers of the game it looked as though it was the Night Hawks who were gonna leave home happy, breaking away from the Phoenix's defense and putting a shot on goal which George Irons had to get down and put a paw on. Thankfully for the Phoenix though the follow up shot, which was put in the back of the net, was overturned due to an offsides call.

Cumberland jumped on the out of position Night Hawks outfield and played the ball quickly from Irons in goal, breaking down the field as fall as the ball could roll. Philipp Schmidtke rolled through several Thomas defenders and after the ball was jumbled up between countless players , it finally rolled to Brima Kamara. Just as he had made a knack for himself, the winger from Sierra Leone buried the shot and forced the crowd onto their feet.

With only thirty seconds left on the clock the Phoenix just needed to thwart any final Thomas attacks, taking their fourth victory in four games.

Cumberland will keep their home stretch going against Brescia University, taking on the Bearcats this coming Wednesday at 3:00 PM.
