Five Phoenix Score in 5-0 Win at Milligan

ELIZABETHTOWN, Tenn.--Cumberland's fast start propelled the 10th-ranked Phoenix to a 5-0 win over Milligan on Saturday.

It was all Cumberland from the start as the Phoenix dominated possession of the ball and controlled the pace of the game. Cumberland fired 25 shots to Milligan's three in the match while putting 12 on frame.

Five different Phoenix scored in the win as Ao Yamada, Lucia Mei, Grace Morris, Gabby Jones, and Uxia Varela each scored. Each Cumberland goal was assisted as Yamada notched two, Emelly Chicas had one, Seika Ikezoe, and Itziar Garcia contributed to the Phoenix goals.

Hannah Thornell picked up the win in goal. She had a pretty relaxing day back there as she didn't face a single shot on goal. Milligan keeper Akyla Walcott made seven saves while allowing five goals.

The Phoenix got off to a fast start with Ao Yamada scoring on a goal off an assist from Emelly Chicas in the 15th minute and Cumberland was rolling from then.

Two minutes laters, Yamada dished it to Lucia Mei for the score and quick 2-0 lead.

In the 29th minute, on a set piece, Yamada found Grace Morris for the third goal of the match.

It was all Phoenix the first 45 minutes as Cumberland fired off 13 shots with seven on goal. Cumberland held the Buffaloes shotless in the first 45 minutes of action.

Gabby Jones scored the first goal of the second half for Cumberland. Milligan had the ball on Cumberland's end before a counter found Jones up top, she beat the keeper to the near post for the goal.

Cumberland added one more goal to put the icing on the cake from Uxia Varela for the 5-0 final score.

The Phoenix are back in action on Tuesday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium for a huge Top 15 matchup. 10th-ranked Cumberland plays host to No. 13 Truett McConnell.
