Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Phoenix Survive First Half Scare to Take down (RV) Olivet Nazarene

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - - Keeping a perfect record through four games, the Cumberland Women's Soccer team took down Olivet Nazarene 2-0 in Illinois.

Starting slower than the Phoenix have tended to under Head Coach Scott Davidson, it was apparent from the start that Cumberland would have to work hard for a victory on the road. Despite an early Kadisha Martina shot scraping off the crossbar, CU struggled to get much going in the way of their attack.

A Phoenix front line that averages nearly 30 shots per game was kept well off their pace in the first half, recording just six shots, three of which were on goal. Credit should be given to the always-great Phoenix defense, now headed by Hannah Thornell in net. Although the box score showed that she saved just one shot in the first 45, the Kiwi transfer was confident coming out of the box, passing with her defense, and shutting down ONU attacks.

The second half seemed to unlock something in the Phoenix attack, recording three shots in the opening five minutes, again though unlucky to hit the crossbar twice. In a game full of what-ifs and almosts, it was finally Ao Yamada who found the breakthrough for the Phoenix in the 66th minute.

Watching Seika Ikezoe dribble down the wing, the Tigers left Yamada unmarked in front of goal and after grabbing a rebounding pass, Uxia Varela laid off a perfect pass to the ever-composed graduate student from Japan; as the scoreline now read 1-0 for Cumberland.

Adding to a momentous final 30 minutes for CU, Gabby Jones was brought down in the right side of the box, making way for back-to-back games with penalties being taken by Ikezoe. Just like she did in Cumberland's riotous win over Truett-McConnell, the junior transfer stepped up and slotted the ball in the right side of the net, past the keeper's outstretched hand.

As time continued to tick by, the Phoenix looked to coast on that two goal lead until the buzzer sounded. Olivet grabbed their first corner kick of the game in the 81st minute but the Cumberland defense was stifling, giving up no real chance. Thornell did well again, despite not having a save recorded, punching a somersault throw-in delivery out of the box on two separate occasions.

Twelve Phoenix shots and forty five minutes later, Cumberland held on comfortably to a 2-0 win over the receiving votes Olivet Nazarene Tigers. CU has now outscored opponents 22 goals to just 1, a total which puts them at the second-top spot in the nation.

Cumberland will remain in Lebanon for their next two matches, first taking on Blue Mountain Christian this coming Wednesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
