Men's Soccer Posts Statement Win over RV Tennessee Southern

PULASKI, Tenn.--The Phoenix picked up a statement win defeating RV Tennessee Southern 9-1 on the road in Pulaski to remain undefeated and hand the Firehawks their first loss of the season. 

Cumberland started the game by scoring early, but a goal from Tennessee Southern brought it back to what seemed to be headed towards a battle. The Phoenix however had different plans and netted seven unanswered goals, six in the second half to win 9-1 over our former conference foe. 

The Phoenix put 10 shots on goal and made the most of them finding the back of the net nine times. Marcos Perez scored the final three goals of the match for CU while adding an assist. Philipp Schmidtke had two goals and an assist. Rune Petersen punched in two goals. Brima Kamara and Robbie Lyons each scored a goal a piece while Lyons had two assists and Kamara had one. 

Cumberland keeper George Irons faced just two shots conceding one goal and making one save. 

The Phoenix got on the board early as Victor Ramirez chipped it forward to Robbie Lyons and he played it across the box for an easy tap-in for Brima Kamara for the early lead. 

In the 15th minute, CU added to the lead. Harold Perea slotted the ball down the wing to Philipp Schmidtke and he played it to the top of the box to Lyons for the goal and a quick 2-0 lead.

The Firehawks had a chance to cut into the deficit with a penalty kick after a foul in the box, but Carlos Galan missed the shot wide to keep it at 2-0. 

The Firehawks did get on the board in the 25th minute on a goal from Manuel Flores. 

In the 37th minute, Lyons played the ball in perfectly for Rune Petersen to punch in a goal and bring the score back to a two goal lead at the half. 

Out of the break, Cumberland kept the throttle down scoring a quick goal. Victor Rmairez dished it to Schmidtke for the score in the 47th minute. 

Schmidtke added his second goal of the match in the 60th minute off an assist from Kamara. Rune Petersen added his second goal in the 76th minute. 

Marcos Perez scored the final three goals of the match in the 79th minute, 84th minute and the final one in the 86th minute. 

The Phoenix have their biggest test of the season on Friday as they travel to No. 2 Dalton State.
