Men's Soccer Drops Undefeated Record to No. 2 Roadrunners

DALTON, Ga. - - The Cumberland men's soccer team fell for the first time this season as No. 2 Dalton State College defended home turf, 2-1.

The game started as any top-15 matchup would with both teams posturing, looking at how their counterparts might set up. Through 15 minutes neither team had recorded a shot on goal, though the Phoenix looked comfortable in the Roadrunners half of the field.

As the match went on however, Dalton State showed why they haven't lost at home in years, building momentum as each minute ticked on. George Irons began to find himself busy in goal, fielding shot after shot from DSC and the away side finally found a breakthrough in the 28th minute.

Breaking the deadlock, the No. 2 team were all over the Phoenix and took that 1-0 lead into the break.

Again finding themselves on the right side of the scoresheet, the Roadrunners came out firing and scored another goal just four minutes into the half. Cumberland continued to build up from the abc despite the pressure from Dalton State and it eventually paid off in the 73rd minute when the Phoenix forced an own goal, making it 2-1.

Sadly for the Phoenix though, their late rally was stifled by DSC, forcing the game to end 2-1 in favor of the ranked side.

Cumberland will be on the road for their next matchup. Taking on the RV Missouri Baptist Spartans on September 18th.
