Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Phoenix Return Home with Victory After Duel with Mo Bap

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - - The Cumberland men's soccer team pulled out a 2-1 victory in a tight matchup against the Missouri Baptist Spartans.

Cumberland looked the aggressor early in the match as the Phoenix backline continued to be forced into adjustments, meaning Eric Zalaya, Ruari Behan, and Edvin Grevskott all started together for the first time this season.

With each side dueling for shots and momentum, it was the Phoenix who struck first. Playing through the middle of the field, Philipp Schmidtke carried the ball and like he's done countless times this season, linked up with Robbie Lyons for the opener.

Lyons made a curved run on the German's left side and Schmidtke was able to play a killer ball into the Irishman who slotted it past the keeper, though the lead was short lived.

Just as Cumberland pulled ahead, less than a minute later the Spartans struck back. A lovely ball down the left wing put Sergej Misic through on goal and he would bring it level.

The Phoenix dominated the rest of the half, putting up several shots that rattled the post or the bar, but the game remained even until the first half buzzer rang.

Cumberland tried to jump on the Spartans early and it paid off as the Spartans tripped a player in the box, calling for a penalty in the 51st minute. Robbie Lyons stepped up and put away the spot kick, making the game 2-1, which is how it would end.

Both sides jockeyed for any sort of momentum with each team registering several shots on goal in the second half, though the Phoenix looked the more threatening side as they hit the crossbar several more times.

In the end the Phoenix outshot the Spartans 20-11 but Mo Bap made it no easy contest, recording just two less shots on goal. With his brace Robbie Lyons retakes the lead for goals scored on Cumberland's team, taking his total to eight on the year.

Cumberland will take a long layoff before their next game, kicking off Mid-South action at Georgetown on September 27th.
