Lyons' Hat-Trick Lifts Phoenix to Conference Opener Win over Tigers, 3-2

GEORGETOWN, Ky.--Robbie Lyons nets a hat-trick to lift the Phoenix over Georgetown in the conference opener, 3-2, at Toyota Stadium Friday evening.

Cumberland (9-1-0, 1-0 MSC) had to sit around and wait a while to get this match in. The Phoenix were supposed to kick-off with Georgetown at 1:00 p.m. central time and instead kicked-off closer to 6:30 p.m. after all the rain made its way through Georgetown.

The Phoenix and Tigers had a battle in this game with Cumberland being bailed out by three goals off the foot of Lyons including a second half penalty kick, which wound up being the game-winner.

Cumberland notched 19 shots in the match with nine finding the target. Georgetown would post 16 shots and seven on goal.

George Irons picked up the win in the goal posting five saves and allowing two goals.

The match started quickly with Georgetown getting on the board in the second minute of the game. The Tigers had a corner kick and the ball bounced around in the box before Pedro Canal headed toward the goal. George Irons got his hands on the ball, but fell back into the goal for the first score of the game.

Just minutes later, Cumberland was able to tie the game as Philipp Schmidtke dropped the ball back to Robbie Lyons for the goal.

In the seventh minute, Lyons scored his second goal of the match as the Phoenix had a corner kick and Luis Cerejo put a good ball in the box for Lyons to hammer it home.

It looked as if the Phoenix were going to head into the locker room up 2-1, but just before the half Georgetown had a great counter-attack. Canal played a long ball forward past all the CU defensemen and Daniel Saer chipped Irons coming out of the box trying to make a save to tie it at the half.

The second half was non-stop action as the match turned really chippy. The Phoenix were able to capitalize on a foul in the box in the 68th minute. Lyons stepped up to the spot and netted his third goal for his first hat-trick of the season and the second of his career with Cumberland.

The Tigers pushed the tempo at the end trying to find the equalizer, but the Cumberland defense was tough to get through holding off Georgetown for the win.

Cumberland will finally be back at home after this four-match road set on Friday, October 4 to take on Campbellsville.
