The Phoenix tame the Lions of Freed-Hardeman to open conference play

LEBANON, Tenn.-- The Phoenix tame the Lions of Freed-Hardeman 3-0

The Phoenix rolled through the lions of Freed-Hardeman after a fantastic start and finish to win the day 3-0. Freshman Lila Cade led the Phoenix in the kill column with 12 and was followed by Paulina Dziedzic who tallied eight on the day. Emma Chavers led with 22 assists and trailing was Manoella Gomes with 12. The Phoenix got hot early and never cooled down.

Set one of the matches started out in a back and forth battle with neither team leading by more than two points until the Lions of Freed-Hardeman made the score 21-17 on a six-to-one run. The Phoenix made a big comeback and went on a six to nothing run to go ahead 24-23 and the capitalized on an attack error to take set one 26-24 in a close set.

The Phoenix started out much stronger in set two with a 7-3 start led by a Lila Cade kill. Freed fought hard to bring it back within reach but another kill from Sydney Andrews put the Phoenix ahead four at 10-6. The Phoenix went on an eight to nothing run led by a pair of service aces by Kaleigh Glass to make the score 15-7. CU finishes set two outlasting the lions 25-17.

The Phoenix got out early in set three with a seven to nothing run making the score 11-4. The lions battled back, going on a small run to bring them within reach but CU was too much. The Phoenix went on another run to lengthen to lead to eight points at 19-11. Cumberland never let off the gas and won 25-18. 

Cumberland will be back in action September 20th in McKenzie, Tenn. where they will face the Wildcats of Bethel University at 6:00 PM.
