LEBANON, Tenn.- - Cumberland Women's Soccer dropped their ranked match-up against #24 Georgia Gwinnett, 3-0.

The Phoenix came out strong, putting up five shots to the Grizzlies one through thirty minutes, looking like they were confident while going forward. Uxia Varela received her first start in the last several games and rattled the crossbar in the 18th minute, giving Cumberland their first big chance of the half.

Both sides looked like they might take a 0-0 tie into the break, but in the 44th minutes disaster struck for the Phoenix. After winning the back in the attacking third of the field, the grizzlies took a shot from distance which Hannahh Thornell parried into the air but we would be found by a grizzlies forward.

Putting the loose ball away GGC flipped the script on what had been a great half for the Phoenix. 

The second half began the same way it ended for the Grizzlies who would score a goal less than ten minutes into the second half. Kendra Davis won the ball in the mid-field and had options on both sides but chose to lay it off Cecilie Povlsen who scored her second goal of the day. 

With a comfortable two goal lead the Grizzlies dropped back players when they needed to and did not allow any attacks from the Phoenix. When the game looked as if it would end 2-0, GGC found another breakthrough in the form of a penalty kick. Georgia Gwinnett's captain Pernilla Westergren, stepped up and buried the shot to set the scoreline at 3-0 in the 83rd minute, which is how the game would end.

Cumberland will be back in action next Friday, kicking off conference play at Georgetown College.
