Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cumberland Drenches Georgetown 4-0 in Conference Opener

GEORGETOWN, Ky.--Cumberland Women's Soccer poured in four goals to go on the road and win their first conference match of the season, 4-0, despite the weather trying to wreak havoc.

The match was originally supposed to start at 11:00 a.m. central time and did not officially kick off until 4:00 p.m. Even with the delay the wind played a big factor in the contest as well as the constant rain falling down.

13th-ranked Cumberland (8-2, 1-0 MSC) bounces back after two consecutive losses to get back on track. The Phoenix fired 24 shots in the contest with 16 on goal. The Cumberland defense played very well only allowing one shot the entirety of the match.

Ao Yamada netted two goals including the game-winner to help start Cumberland off with a win in conference play. Emmelly Chicas scored a goal on a header and Seika Ikezoe had a goal and an assist. Celia Martin picked up the win in goal only having to make one save in the match.

Georgetown (4-1-5, 0-1 MSC) takes their first loss of the season after previously being unbeaten with four wins and five draws. Daysia Thompson helped keep the game relatively close as she made 12 saves in goal.

The match got off to a slow start with both sides just getting one shot on goal off in the first 30 minutes of action, but then the Phoenix capitalized on two set piece opportunities to net goals and go in the locker room up at the half.

Ao Yamada banged in a free kick from 30-yards out to score the first goal of the match. The wind guided the ball into the back of the net as it was perfectly placed for the goal.

A few minutes later, Seika Ikezoe played a corner kick into the box and Emelly Chicas headed it home for the 2-0 lead.

The Phoenix had a few other good looks to end the half, but Tigers keeper Daysia Thompson made nice saves to keep the Cumberland lead at 2-0.

10 minutes into the second half, Ella Tuplin threaded a through ball up to Yamada and Yamada slotted to the back post for her second goal of the match and her sixth goal of the season.

The Phoenix would continue to create opportunities in the second half, but were unable to connect on any until the final minute of the game. Kadisha Martina played a ball through the box and Zoe Collyer found Ikezoe in the middle to beat the keeper for a 4-0 final.

Cumberland will be back in action at Lindsey Donnell Stadium on Friday, October 4 to take on 16th-ranked Campbellsville in the Phoenix's sixth Top 25 match this season.
