Phoenix Split First Day of Action at AC Invite

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - - Cumberland Women's Volleyball split their first day of the Aquinas Cornerstone Invite, first taking down IU South Bend but would then fall to hosts Aquinas.

The Phoenix won their opener of the Aquinas/Cornerstone Crossover with a four-set win over IU-South Bend. The Phoenix hit .298 in the match led by Haley Mitchell with 13 kills. Emma Chavers had a double-double  with 25 assists and 10 digs. Elaine Shaneyfelt led the team in digs with 13. Sydney Andrews and Lila Cade each notched double-digit kills with 10.

Cumberland started the match off slow trailing 5-1 after the first six points and later 8-3. CU rallied to tie the match at 11-11 before grabbing their first lead at 15-14 on an attack error from South Bend. South Bend would go on 30-0 spurt to get up 18-17 and then had match point at 24-23, but three-straight points gave Cumberland the set with kills from Mitchell and Hailey Jones.

South Bend again jumped up early 8-2 in the second set. Cumberland went on a 5-0 run to tie the match at 11-11 with kills from Jones and Cade and three attack errors. South Bend then went on a 6-1 run to get up 17-2, but the Phoenix answered to tie the match at 22-22 before going on a 3-0 spurt to win the set.

Again in the early going, South Bend had a quick 8-2 lead, but this time they capitalized to send the game to a fourth set. They held onto that margin to 13-7 and later 18-12 before winning the third set 25-19.

Tied at 6-6 in the fourth set, Cumberland went on a 3-0 run, but South Bend answered to tie the match at 10-10. The Phoenix won six of the next eight points with the hitters combining for five kills on the stretch. Cumberland would close out the game 25-20 to win the match in four.

Cumberland struggled to get things going in their second match of the day against the No. 12 ranked Saints. The normally high-flying Phoenix attack was held to just a .011% hitting rate, as Aquinas totalled 12 blocks and were massively successful with 44 kills. CU were not able to stack up a large number of stats in comparison to the host side, though Nicole Roeder led the Phoenix in assists, while Hazel Konkel was the leading attacker.

Similarly to their last match Cumberland started off on the backfoot, trailing 5-0 to start the set. Haley Mitchell recorded a kill to stop the bleeding and slowly the Phoenix crept back into the set, evening things up at 8-8. The home side were determined to take the opening frame however, going on to win five of the next six points, then capping off the set with another five point and three point run, winning 25-16.

The second set was one to forget for Cumberland who were unable to ever truly get their feet set, falling behind early and never finding a way into the set. Aquinas were able to hit a clinical .400% while Cumberland hit a negative percentage in a set for the first time this season. The Saints pulled the second set out 25-10.

Ultimately the match went the way of AU, taking the third set in a similar fashion to the first. The Saints took the lead from the start and Cumberland had to fight to find their way back into the match. Trailing by as many as six points to begin the set, the Phoenix managed to find some momentum and make it a two point match, but the Saints had their number, winning 25-14.

Cumberland will be right back to action tomorrow as they have two more matches in the tournament. The Phoenix will take on the University of St. Francis at 10 AM then play co-hosts Cornerstone at noon.
