BARBOURVILLE, Ky.--Luke Holloway slings four touchdown passes as the Phoenix roll in Barbourville to a 38-14 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Cumberland (2-0) had a complete game on both the offensive side and defensive side. The offense went for 407 yards, the second game in a row with 400+ yards. Cumberland went for 212 yards on the ground and threw for 195. The defense held Union to just 172 yards of total offense with just 33 rushing yards.
Holloway had an incredible game completing 12-of-14 passes with four touchdowns and 195 yards. Holloway got eight receivers involved in the passing game. Jarrius Rogers caught four passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Tim Freel caught one ball for 50 yards and a score and Isaiah O'Neal caught a touchdown pass.
The Phoenix had a slew of guys carry the ball this afternoon. Lamar Childress had the most rushing yards with 56 yards on 12 carries. Jeremiah Bryant had 12 carries for 42 yards and a touchdown.
The defense got after the Union quarterbacks this afternoon collecting four sacks as a unit. Dez Wallace led the team in tackles with eight. Defensive lineman Joey Samples and Jaren Tatum each collected five. Kion Threalkill had an interception in the second half.
Union (0-1) used two quarterbacks to combine for 139 yards with one pick.
The Phoenix started slow, but picked up on their second drive going methodically down the field. Cumberland drove 66-yards on 12 plays capped off by a Jeremiah Bryant four yard touchdown rush for a 7-0 lead at the end of the first.
Union was able to tie the game early in the second quarter on a DeMarco Hopkins six yard touchdown rush, but Cumberland answered quick. Rogers took the kickoff 68-yards to the Union 21-yard line. Four plays later, Holloway throws a fade to the corner and Isaiah O'Neal goes up and brings it down for a 9-yard score and 14-7 lead with 12:10 left in the half.
The Phoenix forced a punt on the next Bulldog drive and Holloway found big play Tim Freel wide open for a 50-yard touchdown score to extend the lead to 21-7.
Cumberland was not done there as they got the ball back with a little over two minutes left and did a great job of clock management to add another score. Holloway tossed his third touchdown pass of the half to Rogers from 18-yards out for a 28-7 lead at the break.
The Phoenix held the Bulldogs on the opening drive before taking up eight minutes of game clock on a 13 play drive. Jack Kantner knocked in a 24-yard field goal for a 31-7 lead.
The Bulldogs did take the ensuing kickoff to the house as KeKe McMurry got loose for the score. Kion Threalkill intercepted the next pass from Union and the very next play Holloway threw a 30-yard score to Rogers for the second hook up of the afternoon.
The Phoenix would close out with one more score as Holloway tossed his second touchdown pass to Rogers for the 38-14 final.
Cumberland will finally be at home this upcoming Saturday as Cumberland host St. Andrews at Nokes-Lasater. Kick-off is slated for 1:30 p.m.
