Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Avenge Loss in 6-2 Rout of Faulkner

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Men's Soccer team remained undefeated as they avenged their loss from last season, taking down Faulkner 6-2.

The Phoenix came into today's game with the hopes of avenging their loss from last season, where the Eagles took a 2-0 victory on home soil. Starting in a fashion that is hard to argue with, Philip Shmidtke was assisted across the box by Mark Donaldson, finishing his first shot on goal of the day.

Shortly after however, a short corner was taken by Faulkner and their right winger was able to send a cross back into the box, being put away by Jose Lucca. Despite the leveling the game, Cumberland would pull back ahead before halftime.

The same man who put the Eagles ahead was issued a yellow card for a handball in the box, granting a penalty kick to Robbie Lyons. The senior from Ireland buried the penalty in the right side of the net, past the keepers outstretched hands, putting the Phoenix back ahead.

Giving themselves a two goal cushion, Mark Donaldson played a quick free kick to a sprinting Brima Kamara. The junior from Sierra Leone received the pass with a clean touch and dribbled around inside the box for a Phoenix goal, making the score 3-1 Cumberland.

Again clawing their way back into the game, the Eagles pressed high and found themselves another goal. Making it 3-2, Faulkner's Leo Freire won the ball off of Kacper Wolicki and despite the great last ditch defending, his shot found the back of the net.

Before the break there was a scuffle that saw four yellow cards given between the two sides, one going to Julio Cesar of the Eagles who followed up his citation with another yellow card just minutes later. With the double yellow he was ejected from the game and Faulkner had to play another 45 minutes a man down.

Starting the second half how they began the first, Cumberland pulled ahead by another in just ten minutes. Brima Kamara dribbled down the right wing and crossed a ball to the top of the box, straight to Luis Cerejo who blasted the ball in the back of the net from just inside the 18-yard line.

Adding to an already tense matchup, Deigo Rubio was previously issued a yellow card in the first half and accrued his second yellow with fifteen minutes left to play, leveling the game. At 4-2 things began to look more comfortable for the Phoenix, holding onto a two goal lead but they were not done scoring.

Rune Petersen got in on the action with a great run in behind the Eagle defense to which Harold Perea played his pass between two defenders, leaving the Dane to do the rest. The final member on the Cumberland roster to grab a goal was Mark Donaldson, playing a more attacking role in the latter part of the match. Combining with Marcos Perex, the Scotsman put his shot away to finish a 6-2 game.

Cumberland will be back in action on Tuesday, facing off against former MSC rivals Tennessee Southern. The match is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start.
