Women's Soccer Glutton for Goals in 7-1 Takedown of MBU

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Women's Soccer team piled on more goals to their season tally, taking down Missouri Baptist 7-1.

Cumberland smothered the Spartans defense from the off and although it took 20 minutes, it would be the home side that broke the deadlock. Kadisha Martina got things started for the Phoenix with a goal, assisted by Seika Ikezoe, dribbling her way ahead of a MBU defender and into a 1-0 start.

Uxia Varela made the score 2-0 with another goal for the Phoenix, curving her run wide to give way for Ikezoe who again was able to pick out her teammate for her second assist of the day. The goal gave CU what looked like a strong lead going into the break, the Spartans however had some magic up their sleeve.

Just six minutes after Cumberland pulled ahead it was Missouri who found a goal, coming in the form of a wonder goal from right back Anna Rose Mildred. Checking into the game late in the first half, Skylar Hollingshead made an immediate impact and her layoff to Mildred set up one of the best outside the box strikes you will see all season.

Despite the late heroics, the Phoenix were able to take a 2-1 lead into the half and were reeling from the strike. Just when it looked like momentum might be switching to the away side, Gabby Jones took matters into her own hands.

The senior from Hendersonville, Tennessee broke through the Spartans defense and ran onto a killer ball from Ikezoe and although her shot was saved initially, she made no mistake with the rebound. Her first goal of the day put the Phoenix back ahead by two goals and she was far from finished.

Just four minutes into the half Kadisha Martina played a one touch pass from Grace Morris up to Jones, burying her second goal of the half. Martina found Jones one on one with the keeper and the forward was clinical with her finish.

Rounding off what has to be ten of the best minutes of her career, Jones found her hat trick as she drew the keeper out of the box, dribbled past her, and slotted the ball away to make the score 5-1 for the Phoenix.

Before they would both be pulled off, Martina and Jones linked up one final time to put Cumberland ahead six goals to one. Ikezoe played a ball through the middle to Jones who made a marauding run through the Spartans half of the field before laying off a pass to Martina. The Curaçaoan forward put her second goal of the day in the top right corner, making the score 6-1 for Cumberland.

Taylor Bertotti put a cap on what turned out to be a fantastic game for the Phoenix with her second goal of the season. The senior defender took advantage of a bad pass from the Spartans goalkeeper, running with her interception and placing a ball in the net at the second post.

Cumberland will be back in action this coming Tuesday when they face off against current no. 6 ranked Life University. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
