Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Cannot Find A Way Past No. 3 Tigers

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - - The Cumberland Women's Basketball team traveled to Kentucky this evening to compete against #3 ranked Campbellsville Tigers. After losing the past two games, the Phoenix gave it their all to reverse the streak but came up short. Kayla Gordon was a critical offensive player for the Phoenix contributing 19 points to Cumberland's final score.

The first basket of the game came from Ever Walker, followed by a layup from Emaleigh Tarpley pushing the Phoenix forward. After a foul from Myajae Eubanks, the Tigers finally got on the board from two free throws. From there, Campbellsville quickly reversed the deficit, putting five points on the board over the following minute. The teams stayed within only a few points of one another throughout the majority of the first quarter. Campbellsville's Bradley led the way, but Kayla Gordon trailed closely behind in points. The Tigers were able to go into the second quarter with a five point lead.

Gordon continued to be Cumberland's leading scorer throughout the second quarter, picking up nine by the end of the half. Despite Cumberland's efforts to decrease the deficit, Campbellsville jumped from a five to thirteen point lead to end the half.

Going into the second half, the Phoenix needed to switch the momentum. Both teams came in with a similar drive to score, but producing the same amount of shots allowed the Tigers to keep their lead. Gordon not only continued to lead for the Phoenix, but was the offensive leader on the court with 15 points to end the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Tigers continued to slightly progress their lead. Cumberland was able to keep the Tiger lead to a minimum thanks to the offensive contributions by Gordon and Walker, as well as defensive rebounds made by Colston, Tarpley, and Eubanks. Fouls played a large role in the result of this game, with eleven of Campbellsville's points coming directly from free throws. In the final seconds of the game, Walker was able to put up one more shot for the Phoenix, making the final score of the game 56-79, in favor of Campbellsville.

The Phoenix will play Lindsey Wilson this Saturday on the road, looking to secure an MSC game.
