Women's Basketball Fall to Go-Ahead Basket from LWC in Final Seconds

COLUMBIA, KY. - - The Cumberland Women's basketball team headed to Kentucky for the second time this week, taking on conference foes Lindsey Wilson for the first time this season. Despite a magnificent comeback effort, a go-ahead shot from Lindsey meant the Phoenix had to come home without a win on the road still.

It took time in this one for either team to find their footing, scoring just a combined 11 points through the first five minutes, though it was Emaliegh Tarpley leading the way early. A pair of layups from the sophomore along with a big three pointer from Ever Walker put the Phoenix ahead, but the Blue Raiders rallied to lead at the end of the first quarter.

After that Walker three, Lindsey Wilson went on a 9-2 run, going ahead 18-13 at the first break. Mariyah Person came into the game to start the second and brought with her two big shots off the bench, a layup to start the quarter and a big three pointer to silence the home fans. After several free throws from the Blue Raiders it was Faith Colston hitting a big shot from range to pull the Phoenix back into the game, making it 25-23.

Despite Cumberland hanging in there, the home side began to find some rhythm shooting the ball and they pulled ahead after making jumpers on six consecutive possessions. That run meant the Phoenix were down by double-digits for the first time in the game, a deficit that they had to take into the break, 43-29.

Head Coach Mark Vaughn obviously made several halftime adjustments as his team came out firing from beyond the arc to start the third quarter. Before the Blue Raiders were ever able to hit a shot Tarpley, Walker, and Kayla Gordon all buried three pointers to make it just a five point game. LWC responded with a layup and a three of their own to stretch it back out to a double-digit gap, but the Phoenix were on their tails.

Jordan Harris was having what could be one of her best games of the season, playing crucial minutes in that third quarter comeback, as well as chipping in offensively with Cumberland's final five points of the third coming from her.

Going into the final quarter it was just a nine point game, with much of the momentum on the side of the Phoenix. Another CU player having one of her best games of the season was Tarpley who made four straight free throws and hit a layup to make the game 54-52, showing that the Phoenix had real life in this game despite trailing for much of it.

Just as Cumberland pulled themselves back into the game though, Lindsey would put in four shots before the Phoenix could counter, stretching their lead right back out to ten points. The final moments of the game were full of drama as Colston hit another big three to make it 64-60 and then who else but Emaleigh Tarpley hit back-to-back shots to seal the comeback, finally making it a tie game.

In the final thirty seconds LWC pulled back ahead with three free throws but a well-designed inbounds play set Ever Walker up for a wide open three pointer in the corner which hit the bottom of the net, tying the game at 67-67. Sadly for the Phoenix though, with ten seconds left on the clock, the Blue Raiders inbounded the ball at half court and found their center in the short corner and she hit a go-ahead jumper with just two seconds left on the clock, sealing the 69-67 win for Lindsey.

After all was said and done, Emaleigh Tarpley delivered on what was a career day for herself, shooting 9-17 from the field and 5-7 from the line for a career high 24 points, as well as chipping in with 10 rebounds. Kayla Gordon was next in line with 11 points, shortly trailed by Ever Walker with 9 points all coming from beyond the arc.

Cumberland will have an extended break, not playing for a full week until the University of the Cumberlands Patriots come to town. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 PM.
