Women's Basketball Battle in Tough Loss to #16 Patriots

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Women's Basketball team welcomed conference foes and no. 16 ranked, Cumberlands Patriots, to the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena. Despite staying neck and neck from the first minute to the last, the Patriots took the game 71-59.

With just under six minutes left to play in the first quarter, Ever Walker hit a long range three pointer to put the Phoenix back ahead, but the Patriots answered with a triple of their own to tie it back up. Back-to-back quick steals from the Cumberlands gave them a quick momentum swing, forcing the Phoenix to take a timeout.

Stifling a six-point run in the late parts of the first frame Mariyah Person was fouled on a three-point attempt and hit all three to make it a 12-9 game, though UC were able to add more to their tally before the end of the quarter. Several steals and quick transition buckets combined with slick passing and finishing in transition saw the Patriots run out to their first double-digit lead with only a minute left on the clock, 19-9.

Just ten seconds into the second quarter the Patriots put in a layup to extend their lead, a trend that continued to occur in rapid succession. With just over a minute gone in the quarter the Cumberlands put in four shots with not a single miss. Coming out of their first time out break the Phoenix were again able to stop the bleeding, as Kayla Gordon hit a corner three as the shot clock sounded.

Cumberland kept that pace for the next several minutes, adding in a Walker three-pointer and a Jordan Harris free throw to make it a 28-16 game in favor of UC. Trading shots back and forth kept the game to a double-digit deficit, but whenever Maddie Brillhart entered the game she made the most of it.

The sophomore came down the floor and made a pick-and-pop three pointer while she was still in motion, hitting nothing but the bottom of the net, making it a nine point deficit for Cumberland. With the first half coming to a close the Patriots looked like they were well in the driver's seat but a pair of free throws from Jordan Harris and a Mariyah Person layup brought it back to ten points between the two at the break.

Each quarter followed a similar trend and the third was no different, with neither team scoring more than one basket in a row until nearly five minutes was off the board. After hand fighting with a Patriots player Ever Walker was given an offensive foul, but the very next possession she responded with a big corner three in front of the Phoenix bench which set the crowd on fire.

Walker's effort along with a Kayla Gordon layup finally got the game back to single digits for the home side, again though the Patriots had an answer with a long range effort to stretch it back to ten points between the two, 46-36. Trading shots again and again, that same ten points separated each team until the final break, only thanks to a beautiful last second pass and layup from Mariyah Person to Jordan Harris.

The final quarter of the game provided plenty of action straight from the off, as the Pats put in back-to-back three points with Ever Walker providing one of her own, all in the opening minute of the frame. As the game sat at 63-52 the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena was as lively as ever, breathing life into the basketball team.

Jordan Harris has been giving increasingly more important minutes to ehr team and again she showed up in the final minutes, hitting a pair of shots from the charity stripe to make it a 63-54 ballgame. In crunchtime the Cumberlands hit several big shots to extend their lead out to a point the Phoenix could not manage.

After all was said and done, Ever Walker had one of her best games in a Phoenix jersey, scoring 16 points while going a perfect 4-4 from long range. Nine different members of the Phoenix were able to get points on the board in this battle against the high ranked Patriots, but it ended 70-57 for the away side.

Cumberland will be back in action next Thursday, January 30th against the current no. 7 team in the nation, Freed-Hardeman. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 in Lebanon.
