Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Bison Run Past the Phoenix in Season Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - To kick off their 2025 season, the Cumberland Men's tennis team took the short trip down the road to take on NCAA DI opponents, Lipscomb University.

The Phoenix started behind the eight ball as the Bisons stampeded their way to take the doubles points. Gabriel Godoy and Daniel Wessels were the first to fall for Cumberland, 6-1, dropping their first service game and with that, all their match momentum.

Just a minute later Lipscomb grabbed their second win as well as the doubles point, taking #3 doubles 6-2. Elisey Kalashnikov and Paul-Daniel Meyer held serve and broke the Bisons to pull ahead 2-0, but the home side flipped the script and took six straight games to win the set and the game.

Finally, the top seeded pairing of Vitor Ferreira and Julian Parada clawed their way back into their own match despite the point being lost already, hoping to pull back some momentum the way of the Phoenix. After being broken twice and unable to break the Bisons serve they found themselves down 4-0, but fought all the way back to fall in a tight 6-3 set.

Singles was full of back and forth action with the Phoenix taking several of the first sets and the Bisons matching their energy all the way throughout the match. Gabriel Godoy was the first domino to fall for Cumberland, dropping both of his first service sets and never fully recovering to lose 6-2, 6-0 against tough competition at #4.

The next point to go on the board was for the Bisons again as the first year transfer Arne Sohmer battled it out at the #6 spot. Sohmer looked confident in his first set, pulling ahead 5-2 with just one game needed to take the set, yet it was his opponent fighting back to take the set 7-5.

With all the momentum going the way of his opponent after a set like that, the German had to play a defensive brand of tennis. Trying to make his counterpart deal with slices and heavy topspin worked to keep himself in the match, but it ultimately was not enough as he fell 7-5, 6-3.

Paul-Daniel Meyer also dropped his match in straight sets, though the sophomore didn't go down without a fight. Another slow start put him behind 3-0 in the first set but Meyer made a double break to get back into the match at 4-4. Despite his comeback effort it was his opponent at #3 that took the set 6-4.

His second set was full of drama as Meyer went down 5-0, yet refused to bow out like that. As fans overlooked the action at the Ensworth Tennis Center, Meyer hit shot after shot to miraculously make it 5-5, but again it was the Bisons who found their way to win in the end, 6-4, 7-5.

With the victory sealed for Lipscomb the final matches continued, all making it to a deciding third set.

The Bison kept stampeding their way through the Cumberland lineup, taking down Julian Parada in the #5 singles spot. The Colombian took advantage of a slow start from his opponent, looking a step ahead for the entire first set to win 6-1.

After that big first set however, Parada could not keep up after his opponent began to find his footing. The senior's second set lead at 2-1 was the last time he saw himself ahead, dropping the final two sets, ending 6-1, 4-6, 1-6.

Like Parada, Daniel Wessels was able to take his first set, 6-2, but the South African would fall to that same score his following two. After dropping his third service game in the second set, Wessels struggled to find a way past the #2 singles player for Lipscomb, losing 6-2, 2-6, 2-6.

Finally, it came down to Vitor Ferreira to try and scrape one point of the day for the Phoenix. The Brazilian dropped his first set 6-2 but began to find his rhythm in the second, making it all the way to a tiebreak, where he dispatched his opponent 7-6 (7-3), to force a final set.

As he was the last court from the seeded players, all eyes were on this two hour battle, which would go the way of Lipscomb. Ferreira was able to break the #1 seeds first service game and held his own to go ahead 2-0, but the top ranked Bison fought back to win, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3, 6-2.

Cumberland will face another NCAA DI rival next Friday, taking on the Belmont Bruins on their home court.
