Bruins Take Down Phoenix in Close 5-2 Defeat

Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Men's Tennis team played the Belmont Bruins to a tight 5-2 loss, dropping their second match of the season to an NCAA DI opponent.

Doubles did not go in the Phoenix favor from the start, as Gabriel Godoy and Elisey Kalashnikov were the first pairing to go down. Despite holding their own serve at times, the Bruins broke when they needed to to take #2 doubles by a score of 6-2.

The third match never had a chance to finish as Vitor Ferreria and Julian Parada lost 6-3 at the number one spot, after going up with an early break. The Bruins did well to hold their serves for the remainder of the match and break through the Phoenix attack, winning 6-3.

Daniel Wessels and Paul-Daniel Meyer were trailing 5-3 when their match came to a close.

In singles, Arne Sohmer was the first match to come to a close, falling in two sets at the #5  spot. Eli Mizerski of Belmont shocked the German early as he took the first set to the tune of a 6-0 shutout, though Sohmer fought back in the second to make it 2-2 early on. Belmont's five was able to stifle his efforts, as Sohmer lost 6-0, 6-2.

Elsewhere, Hassan Ammar got his first taste of collegiate action and was only just beaten in his first set, falling to a single service break, 6-4. His second set followed much of that same pattern as he played it out to a 2-1 match to start, but his competition was too much as the Egyptian fell 6-4, 6-3 at the six spot.

At the second spot Vitor Ferreira battled with his opponent but couldn't find a way past him, dropping the first set 6-2, and although he played a stronger second set he still fell 6-4 which gave the Bruins the deciding point to take the match 4-0.

After a tough outing this past weekend Gabriel Godoy was able to come back in a great way this week, winning a dramatic first set tiebreaker at 11-9! His momentum from that tiebreaker seemed to carry over to his second set and that helped push him out to a 6-2 victory in the second set, giving him his first collegiate win at 7-6 (11-9), 6-2.

Paul-Daniel Meyer was also playing great as he battled to a 6-6 deadlock in the first set, meaning he had to play out the next tiebreaker at #3 singles. The sophomore ran out to a 4-1 lead in the tiebreak and went on to win it 8-6 to take a set lead. Like Godoy, Meyer used the momentum to his advantage, winning 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.

In the poll position Daniel Wessels played possibly the tightest match of the night, but would lose in straight sets. The senior lost each set by just two games, falling 6-4, 7-5.

The Phoenix will have an extended break before their next match, where they will take on Sewanee. The match is scheduled for February 8th at 10 AM.
