Phoenix Take Down Tigers En Route to Matchup with Top-seed Blue Raiders

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - - The Cumberland men's tennis team took down the No. 5 seed Campbellsville Tigers in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Championship, 4-2.

Doubles went the way of the Phoenix by a score of 2-0, though there was still a battle happening on the top court. Arthur Fernandes and Arne Sohmer continued their dominant run at two doubles with a 6-2 victory, while Matheus Guarnieri and Mohamed Bouhlel locked the point in with a win at three doubles, 7-5.

The one match that was abandoned due to the point being claimed already was between the pairing of Carlos Morillas and Mateus Mori and the Tigers top team, all locked up at 5-5.

Campbellsville did well to flip the momentum onto their side in singles as they did manage two points, but with Cumberland only needing three of the final six courts to win, they maintained their composure. Mohamed Bouhlel won the quickest out of any Phoenix, taking a 6-2, 6-2 win on court five.

Just past him on court six was Arne Sohmer, who despite a late rally from Campbellsville, saw a straight sets win to even the match up at two apiece, 6-3, 7-5. The match clinching point came on court three, where recent All-Conference Second Teamer Arthur Fernandes was involved in a three set thriller.

The Brazilian charged ahead early with a strong 6-1 set win, dropped his second set 6-2, but ultiamtley pulled it off for the Phoenix with a third set 6-4 victory. With the match clinching fourth point, Matheus Guarnieri was unable to finish his match as he trailed in the third set, 6-3, 6-7, 2-5.

Carlos Morillas fell on court two, 6-1, 6-0, while Mateus Mori also struggled to get a foothold in his match on court four, falling 6-2, 6-1.

The Phoenix will now advance to play against the top-seed in the tournament, Lindsey Wilson University. The two sides will square off tomorrow afternoon in the first semifinals match of the day at 3 PM CT.
