Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Stun No. 1 Freed-Hardeman in Home Court Upset

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Men's Basketball takes down No. 1 Freed-Hardeman with a huge 89-79 win over the defending national champions.

Cumberland (10-10, 3-2 MSC) upset No. 1 Freed-Hardeman for their first win over a No.1 ranked team since beating Mountain State at home in 2005. The Phoenix were super efficient tonight shooting 55.1% from the field and even 50.0% from the three going 7-for-14. The Phoenix went to the line 37 times, knocking down 27 free throws.

Demarius Boyd had everything going tonight scoring 28 points. Boyd went 8-for-13 from the field, went 3-for-6 and 9-of-10 from the line. He also added in seven boards and three assists. Jalen Anglin also went for 20 points in the win. Anglin went 5-for-11 from the field and 9-of-10 from the line as well.

Triston Conger scored 12 points while going 5-for-7 with six boards and six assists. Khi Wallace also scored 12 points and added a team-high nine boards and three blocks. Keyshawn Robinson scored 10 points and posted six rebounds. Nick Brunetti scored seven points off the bench.

Freed-Hardeman (19-3, 4-2 MSC) started slow and was held to 30-of-68 (44.1%) shooting the ball including 4-for-23 from three. The Lions went 15-for-20 from the charity stripe. Freed-Hardeman played a lot of one-on-one basketball only having six assists as a team in the game.

Geraldo Lane led the Lions in scoring with 16 points before he fouled out. Former Phoenix Jordan Stephens added 15 points on 4-of-12 shooting and going 0-for-5 from deep. Peyton Law scored 14 with a team-high nine boards and Phil Horton added 13 points and six boards.

Freed-Hardeman scored the first two buckets of the game, but Robinson got the offense started with an and-one conversion. Anglin followed with a corner three to give CU the lead, but Freed would score the next five points to go up 9-6.

Over the next four possessions, Cumberland scored on every trip for a 9-0 run and CU never trailed the rest of the game. The Phoenix expanded upon that run to make it a 16-2 run to go up 22-11 with 11 minutes left in the first.
Cumberland continued their momentum to build up their largest lead of the game at 32-18. Freed-Hardeman closed the half on a 10-5 run to chip away at the lead. The Phoenix were held scoreless the final three minutes of the half to play to a 37-28 game.
Boyd led the charge late in the half, scoring six of his 11 first-half points in the final four minutes to keep Cumberland in front.
Cumberland maintained its lead throughout the second half, holding off multiple runs from Freed-Hardeman to secure an 89-79 victory. The Phoenix came out strong after halftime, extending their lead to double digits behind a balanced scoring effort from Demarius Boyd, Jalin Anglin, and Triston Conger. Freed-Hardeman responded with a quick surge, cutting the deficit to five, but a timely three-pointer from Boyd and a layup from Khi Wallace helped Cumberland regain control.

Midway through the half, Freed-Hardeman continued to push, closing the gap to four points after a dunk from Phil Horton and a layup from Jordan Stephens. However, Cumberland stayed composed, getting key contributions from Anglin and Boyd at the free-throw line to keep their advantage intact. A transition layup from Conger put the Phoenix back up by eight with just over six minutes to play.

As the clock wound down, Freed-Hardeman made one final push, pulling within five on a three-pointer by Peyton Law. Cumberland responded with clutch free throws, as Boyd and Anglin combined to go 6-for-6 at the line in the final minute. A late tip-in from Sam Powell was not enough for Freed-Hardeman, as the Phoenix iced the game at the stripe.

The Phoenix will hit the road on Saturday to take on third-ranked Georgetown in Kentucky. Tip-off is set to follow the women's game at 2:00 p.m. central time and 3:00 p.m. local time.
