Phoenix Upset No. 2 Ranked Blue Raiders On Road for Biggest Win in Three Seasons

COLUMBIA, Ky. - - The Cumberland men's soccer team hit the road to take on the mighty task of facing off with the No. 2 ranked Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson and the Phoenix would pull out 3-2 victors.

After watching the Cumberland women's soccer team pull a draw back in the last four seconds of the game just before them, the men's side looked energized from the very beginning. As just three minutes had come off the clock, Luis Cerejo dribbled along the eighteen yard line and ripped a shot which froze the Blue Raiders goalkeeper, 1-0 for the Phoenix.

Obviously catching Lindsey Wilson off guard, the Phoenix poured on the pressure when they countered and it was Philipp Schmidtke adding in a second goal in the ninth minute, stunning the home fans all along the sideline.

The Blue Raiders fought and clawed as they tried to get their way back into the match, but the Phoenix looked happy to absorb pressure and hit the home side on the break. In the 36th minute Miquel Gelabert sealed the first half Phoenix hat trick and demoralized Lindsey Wilson to a point of no return.

That 3-0 lead followed Cumberland into halftime and all the way to late in the second, but the game still had plenty of drama to offer late on. In the 79th minute the Blue Raiders were given a penalty kick for a borderline foul on the edge of the box, which they converted to make it 3-1.

Despite playing a man down the Blue Raiders looked to pile on all of the pressure they could, earning themselves another goal to pull within one in the 82nd minute, though it was all in vain as that would be the final scoreline. In the final moments of the game both sides were shown a red card as well, leaving just 19 players from the starting 22.

With the win, the Phoenix pick up their highest ranked win in years and now have two top ten victories this season.

Cumberland will now have to wait over a week to take on No. 24 ranked Bethel in Mckenzie, Tennessee.
