Three Defensive Touchdowns lift No. 18 Georgetown over Cumberland

GEORGETOWN, Ky.--Cumberland had a chance to make it interesting late however a 99-yard pick six capped a three defensive touchdown  day for No. 18 Georgetown in a 34-13 win.

Cumberland (4-3, 0-2 MSC) turned the ball over four times with three of the going for touchdowns. The defense held Georgetown to just one touchdown and two field goals in the afternoon.

The Phoenix moved the ball effectively, outgaining Georgetown 356-246 and picking up 27 first downs to the Tigers' 12. But four turnovers, including two fumbles returned for touchdowns and a 99-yard interception return, proved too much to overcome.

Georgetown (5-2, 2-1 MSC) struck first with a 46-yard field goal midway through the opening quarter, then added a short touchdown pass late in the second to take a 10-0 halftime lead. The Tigers' defense took over from there, scoring twice in the third quarter on an 18-yard fumble return and an 8-yard fumble returned for a touchdown to stretch the lead to 27-0.

Cumberland got on the board midway through the third when Lamar Childress punched in a two-yard rushing touchdown to cut the deficit to 27-7 to cap a 13-play drive. Jacob Cornejo added a three-yard touchdown run in the fourth.

The Phoenix got a big interception on the next drive from safety Zander Lipscomb and had a chance to make it interesting late. Driving all the way inside the five-yard line before a 99-yard pick six sealed the game for the Tigers.

Quarterback Jake Parker finished 26-for-45 for 240 yards through the air, adding 66 rushing yards on 13 carries. Isaac Finch led the receiving corps with eight catches for 75 yards, while Isaiah O'Neal added four receptions for 47 yards.

Defensively, Eli Denton paced the Phoenix with eight tackles, and Cannon Johnson added six. Cumberland's lone takeaway came from  Lipscomb's interception in the second half.

Despite controlling possession for nearly 35 minutes, the Phoenix were undone by three lost fumbles and two interceptions.

Cumberland finally returns home next weekend for a Mid-South Conference matchup against No. 9 Campbellsville. Homecoming festivities will take place prior to kick-off at 1:30 p.m.
