Balanced Attack Leads Cumberland Past Point to Start UHSP Tip-Off Classic, 80-48

ST. LOUIS, Mo.--Cumberland women's basketball opened the 2025-26 season in dominant fashion Friday afternoon, cruising past Point University, 80-48, at the UHSP Tip-Off Classic.

Cumberland shot an impressive 50.9% (29-of-57) from the field and 94.1% (16-of-17) at the free-throw line. The Phoenix also outrebounded Point 44-26 and assisted on 19 of their 29 field goals. CU forced 17 turnovers while committing 17 of their own but held a commanding 40-6 advantage in points in the paint.

Five Phoenix finished in double figures. Sydney Schwallie led the way with 17 points, adding six assists, two steals, and two rebounds. Emaleigh Tarpley filled the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, while Riley Long contributed 14 points, six rebounds, and two blocks off the bench. Faith Colston tallied 13 points and nine boards, nearly securing a double-double, and Ty Buckley added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Point struggled to find rhythm offensively, shooting 27.8% (15-of-54) from the floor and 26.1% (6-of-23) from three. The Skyhawks finished 12-of-20 from the free-throw line and were outscored 40-6 in the paint.

Imani Dennard paced Point with 14 points, three assists, and two rebounds, while Zariah Fannin scored nine points on a pair of triples. Azziza Flowers added six points and six rebounds, and Carmen Bridges chipped in nine points off the bench.

The Phoenix dominated early, jumping out to a 20-9 lead after the opening quarter behind inside scoring from Tarpley and Colston. Cumberland continued to pull away in the second quarter with a balanced attack—Schwallie scored 10 in the frame as CU outscored Point 24-13 to take a 44-22 halftime lead.

Cumberland's defensive intensity never wavered, holding Point to just 13 points in each of the final two quarters. Long and Buckley powered the Phoenix inside while Tarpley and Colston continued to control the boards. CU led by as many as 34 points late in the third before coasting to an 80-48 final.

Cumberland will face Central Methodist on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. to close out play at the UHSP Tip-Off Classic in St. Louis.
