Phoenix Can't Get Past Hot Shooting Grizzlies

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Cumberland men's basketball couldn't keep up with a hot-shooting Georgia Gwinnett squad Wednesday night, falling 101-77 on the road.

The Phoenix shot 33.3% from the field (25-for-75) and 30.8% from three (8-for-26) while knocking down 19-of-25 free throws (76.0%). Triston Conger led the way with 18 points, three rebounds, and three assists, while Michael Nwoye recorded a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double along with three steals.

Riggs Abner provided a spark off the bench with 14 points on 6-for-6 shooting at the line, and Nick Brunetti chipped in 10 points, five boards, and four assists. Jake Hatch added eight points and two triples, and Zaylin Rowland finished with six points, three rebounds, and three assists. Cumberland totaled 42 rebounds (17 offensive), 15 assists, 10 steals, and 29 points from its bench.

The Phoenix hung around early, trailing just 48-40 at halftime after trimming what was once a 19-point deficit. Triston Conger and Jake Hatch hit key threes in the late stretch of the half to keep CU within striking distance. But the Grizzlies still had control at the break, using hot shooting to their advantage.

Cumberland struck first in the second half and trimmed the lead down to five points, but the home side pulled away and wouldn't look back, winning 101-77.

Cumberland (5-2) will stay on the road, heading to Owensboro to take on Brescia next Tuesday.
