Phoenix Sweep Bethel to Advance to Mid-South Conference Semifinals

Bowling Green, Ky.--Cumberland volleyball put together a complete performance on Thursday sweeping Bethel (25-21, 25-18, 25-8) in the Mid-South Conference Quarterfinals to punch its ticket to the semifinals.

The Phoenix out-hit the Wildcats .298 to .042 with 50 kills to just 20, racking up 44 assists, six aces, eight total blocks and 74 digs in the three-set victory. Lila Cade paced the attack with 15 kills on a .438 clip to go with 10 digs and three blocks, while MSC Freshman of the Year Carlee Rogers stuffed the stat sheet with 11 kills, 23 assists, 15 digs and four aces. Morgan Snead was great on the back row picking up 24 digs in three sets.

Bethel grabbed a quick lead in the opening, but Rogers settled things in a hurry with back-to-back service aces and a pair of connections with Cade to spark a 6–0 run. From there, Cumberland controlled the tempo, building a cushion behind balanced scoring in the middle from Hazel Konkel and on the pins from Cade and Jacey Hubbell. Bethel made its best push late, trimming the margin, but Sydney Andrews and Hailey Jones came up with key swings at the net before Rogers hammered the final ball off the block to close out a 25–21 first-set win.

Cumberland carried that momentum into the second, racing out to a 5–2 advantage as Cade and Konkel put balls away in transition and Emma Carter spread the offense with a steady hand. A block from Konkel and Cade helped the Phoenix stretch the lead, and Hubbell caught fire on the right side during the middle of the set. Bethel briefly clawed back within three at 17-14, but Cumberland's serve-and-pass game answered the surge. Carter dropped in a service ace, Andrews and Cade each added timely kills, and Naomi Wiersma came off the bench to land a kill down the line as the Phoenix closed the frame on an 8-4 run to take it 25-18.

The third set was all Phoenix. After trading points early to 2–2, Rogers went back to work both at the net and behind the line, sparking a massive scoring run highlighted by kills from Cade, Hubbell, Andrews and Jones, plus another Rogers ace as Cumberland built a double-digit lead in a hurry. The Phoenix hit a blistering .500 in the final frame with 19 kills and just two errors while holding Bethel to negative efficiency, and the block tightened up with Jones in the middle of several stuffs. Naomi Wiersma added another kill and Glass chipped in an ace before a Wildcat attack error sealed a dominant 25-8 finish and the sweep.

Rogers and Cade led a long list of contributors as Hubbell finished with seven kills and two blocks, Andrews added six kills on .312 hitting with a pair of blocks, Konkel posted five kills at .333 with two block assists and Jones tallied three kills and a match-high four blocks. Libero Snead anchored the back row while Carter notched 17 assists and an ace and Kaleigh Glass collected nine digs, four assists and an ace.

With the win, Cumberland advances to the Mid-South Conference Semifinals and will face top-seeded and 10th-ranked University of the Cumberlands tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. CT in Bowling Green, with a spot in Saturday's championship match on the line.
