Cumberland Sweeps the Day at the Baron Duals

MT. VERNON, Ga.--The ninth-ranked Cumberland wrestling team delivered a statement performance at the Baron Duals on Saturday, sweeping all three duals and piling up bonus points across the lineup in dominant wins over West Virginia Tech, RV St. Thomas, and RV Brewton-Parker.

Cumberland opened the Baron Duals with a dominant 47-6 win over West Virginia Tech, taking nine of the ten bouts and building a 47-0 lead before the final match. Chase Walker set the tone early with a fall at 125, followed by back-to-back wins from Justin Bradford and No. 3 Sammy Shires to put CU up 13-0. No. 3 Victor Guzman kept the momentum rolling with a first-period pin at 149, and Ellis Otting added a 20-4 tech fall at 157.

The Phoenix continued to pour it on as No. 15 Ethan Gomez earned a fall at 165, and No. 16 Anthony Pyron followed with a quick tech fall at 174. Logan Heckert received a forfeit at 184 before No. 8 Tyler Rowland recorded one of the fastest falls of the day, sticking his opponent in 26 seconds at 197. WVU Tech's lone points came at heavyweight.

Cumberland kept rolling in the second dual with a 44-6 victory over RV St. Thomas, once again winning nine bouts and piling up bonus points throughout the lineup. Walker opened with a major over No. 14 Connor Hueck at 125 before Bradford and Shires extended the lead to 10-0. Guzman and Elijah Griffin provided back-to-back technical falls at 149 and 157, pushing the advantage to 20-0.

Gomez delivered a fall at 165, and Pyron followed with a pin just 1:42 into the 174 bout. Heckert and Rowland stacked two more falls at 184 and 197, ballooning the lead to 44-0 before St. Thomas picked up a win at heavyweight.

Cumberland closed the day with its most complete performance, shutting out host Brewton-Parker 56-0 to finish a perfect 3-0 at the Baron Duals. The Phoenix recorded bonus-point wins in all 10 bouts, including six falls and four technical falls. Walker started with a pin at 125, Bradford accepted a forfeit at 133, and Shires and Guzman rolled to big tech falls at 141 and 149.

Griffin and Gomez continued the onslaught with tech falls at 157 and 165 before Pyron picked up a first-period fall at 174. Heckert added a 35-second pin at 184, Rowland secured his third fall of the day at 197, and Dixon closed the sweep with a 15-second fall at heavyweight, Cumberland's fastest pin of the event.

The Phoenix will be back on the mat next Saturday at the Lucha Open hosted by Life University in Marietta, Georgia.
