Men's Soccer Win First National Tournament Game in Program History with Authoritative 3-0 Win over Carroll (Mont.)

LEBANON, Tenn. -- Cumberland punched its ticket to the NAIA National Championship final site on Saturday afternoon, powering past Carroll (Mont.) with a commanding 3-0 victory at Lindsey Donnell Stadium. With the win, the Phoenix advance to face Georgia Gwinnett in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Cumberland controlled the match from the opening whistle, outshooting the Saints 26-12 and piling on constant pressure. The breakthrough finally came in the 38th minute when Wesley Mendoza came off the bench and scored, burying a rebound after Philipp Schmidtke struck the post just seconds earlier. That finish sent the Phoenix into halftime with momentum and a 1-0 lead.

The home side wasted no time doubling the advantage after the break. In the 58th minute, a Pau Ortega corner kick ended with Luis Cerejo slotting home his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Jostin Angel and Mendoza. Cumberland continued to dictate play throughout the second half, and Dominik Gedek added the exclamation point in the 81st minute, smashing in his first goal of the year to seal the result.

Defensively, the Phoenix were sharp and disciplined. Eric Zalaya recorded the shutout with two saves, anchored by a back line that consistently cleared danger and limited Carroll to just two shots on frame. On the other end, Saints goalkeeper Juan Muniz Navarrete was forced into 10 saves as Cumberland generated chance after chance.

After securing a dominant performance in front of their home faithful, Cumberland now turns its attention to the national stage. The Phoenix will take on Georgia Gwinnett at the final site in Orange Beach, Alabama, looking to continue their postseason run.
