Women’s Basketball Overcomes Slow Start to Vanquish the Knights

LEBANON, TENN. - - Cumberland's defense forces 30 turnovers and hits 12 three-point shots as the Phoenix rout the Knights.

The Phoenix started slow to begin this game, with the Phoenix missing their first eight shots as well as committing three turnovers in the first five minutes of the game.

After a round of substitutions, the Phoenix began to find the net after an 8-0 opening run by the Knights. This run was led by the reserves, with junior forward Maddie Brillhart scoring the first five points for the Phoenix and having ten points in the first quarter. In the first quarter, Cumberland had 20 of their 24 first-quarter points coming from the bench and outscored Kentucky Christian 24-5 after the first five minutes.

Cumberland had a similar start to the second quarter as the first, with the Phoenix being outscored 10-5 and the Phoenix shooting 1-12 in the first six minutes. After the media timeout, the Phoenix were able to find some scoring and extend their lead to ten before the halftime break with a score of 39-29.

The Phoenix forced 11 turnovers in the first half and 42.9% shooting from the Knights, while shooting 33.3% from the field and 26.3% from three.

The third quarter was dominated by senior guard Ty Buckley, even though Buckley was playing with three fouls, the Meridian, Mississippi native was able to generate multiple hustle plays and get ten points and two rebounds in the first five minutes of the second half to increase the lead to 21.

For the rest of the third quarter, the Phoenix held serve against Kentucky Christian, as they headed into the final quarter up 65-41.

In the fourth quarter, the Phoenix put on the finishing touches to this game with Buckley and sophomore forward Braley Bushman leading the charge. Buckley added four points and a rebound in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, with Bushman adding five points, one assist, and one steal. Cumberland was able to get their lead to 29 before the media timeout.

Coming out of the final media timeout, Cumberland was able to hold the Knights to only three points and win the game 84-50. 

Three Phoenix finished the game in double figures in points: Brillhart and Buckley with 17, and Bushman with 14. Along with her 17 points, Buckley added seven rebounds and two steals, while Bushman added four assists and six steals. Junior forward Emaleigh Tarpley led the game in total rebounds with ten. 

The Phoenix shot 37.8% from the field, 31.6% from three, and 62.5% from the free throw line, while the Knights shot 37.7% from the field, 7.7% from three, and 60% from the free throw line.

Cumberland is on the road for their next game as they go face the University of Alabama Huntsville on Tuesday, November 25th at 1:00 PM.
