Phoenix Fall Short to Hot Shooting Chargers in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - - Cumberland women's basketball couldn't keep pace with a hot-shooting UAH squad on Tuesday afternoon, falling 89-63.

The Phoenix opened well, hitting 6-of-10 in the first quarter and staying within 18-15 after a late three from Maddie Brillhart. UAH then began to take control in the second quarter, outscoring the Phoenix 22-10 in the quarter, fueled by pressure defense and second-chance opportunities to build a 40-25 halftime lead. Cumberland shot just 4-for-14 in the period and struggled at the line, going 2-of-8.

UAH continued to separate out of the break, knocking down four threes in the third and shooting nearly 59 percent in the quarter. Cumberland responded with its best offensive stretch of the game, scoring 25 points in the third. Emaleigh Tarpley continued her strong offensive effort in the quarter but the Chargers' perimeter scoring pushed the margin out of reach.

Tarpley led the Phoenix with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, adding five rebounds, while Ty Buckley finished with 12 points, three rebounds, and three steals. Braley Bushman also provided a spark off the bench with 11 points and two steals. Cumberland shot 46.2 percent from the field (24-of-52) but went just 3-of-12 from three and really fell short at the line. going 12-of-27. One spot that CU shined though was with 23 points off turnovers, also chipping in 38 points in the paint.

UAH was paced by Lili Wilken's 26 points and Paris Opelt's 17, with the Chargers shooting 53.1 percent overall and hitting 11 threes. They also held a 43-27 advantage on the glass, turning 18 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points.

Cumberland will now have a week's rest before hitting the road again next week to take on Oakland City in Indiana next Tuesday.
