Guzman Wins 149 lb Bracket at Lucha Open

MARIETTA, Ga.--Cumberland Wrestling turned in a strong showing at the Lucha Open hosted by Life University on Saturday, highlighted by Victor Guzman's Gold Division title at 149, Sammy Shires' runner-up finish at 141, and Antonio Parker's fourth-place run in the Silver Division at 157. The Phoenix piled up bonus-point wins throughout the day and saw several wrestlers make deep consolation pushes across both divisions.

Guzman was dominant all day, stringing together one of the most impressive tournament runs of the event. He opened with a 15-3 major decision before pinning his next opponent in the second round. From there, Guzman hit another gear tech falling Missouri Baptist's Jacob Sinn (22-6) in the quarterfinals and pinning 10th-ranked Kolton Malone of Southern Oregon in the semis. In the championship bout, he controlled the match wire-to-wire with an 11-5 decision over Brandon Higgins to claim the Gold Division title and a team-high 26.5 points.

Shires methodically worked his way through the 141 bracket with a clean, composed performance. He opened with a fall in 2:04, then shut down Campbell's Hudson Waldrop with a 4-0 decision. Shires followed with a 16-2 major decision in the quarters and another shutout, 4-0, in the semifinals over Southeastern's Drew Jones. In the title bout, Shires ran into Paradigm Wrestling's Ruben Calderon, who edged him by major decision. Shires finished the day as the Gold Division runner-up with 19 team points.

Parker authored one of the longest and grittiest tournament runs of the entire Lucha Open, wrestling 10 matches on the day and winning eight of them. After an opening-round tech fall, Parker dropped into the consolation bracket where he turned into a bonus-point machine. He rattled off wins by tech fall, fall (twice), major decision, decision, and a medical forfeit, then secured a tight 8-6 win in the consolation semifinal to reach the third-place match. Due to a no-contest ruling, Parker officially placed fourth in the silver bracket.
