Guzman named MSC Wrestler of the Week

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland's Victor Guzman has been named the Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Guzman, a graduate student from Rock Island, Ill., turned in a dominant performance at the Lucha Open hosted by Life University to claim the 149-pound Gold Division title.

Ranked No. 2 nationally at 149, Guzman posted a perfect 5-0 record on the day and improved to 8-0 overall this year. He opened the tournament with a commanding 15-3 major decision before pinning his second opponent in under five minutes. Guzman continued to pour it on in the quarterfinals, tech falling Missouri Baptist's Jacob Sinn, 22-6, then delivered his most impressive win of the event with a second-period fall over 10th-ranked Kolton Malone of Southern Oregon in the semifinals.

In the championship bout, Guzman controlled the match from start to finish, securing an 11-3 decision over Brandon Higgins to secure the Gold Division crown and cap one of the most dominant tournament runs of the day.

Guzman is the second Phoenix to earn the honor this season joining freshman Chase Walker. This is Guzman's third Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Week award of his career.
