Defensive Effort in Second Half Pushes Phoenix Past Union Commonwealth

LEBANON, Tenn.-- Cumberland men's basketball used a dominant second-half surge to take down Union Commonwealth, 75-63.

The Phoenix shot 41.3% from the floor (26-for-63) and dominated the interior with 40 points in the paint. CU hit 3-of-13 from beyond the arc (23.1%) and went 20-for-28 at the line (71.4%). Cumberland crushed the glass with a 48–35 advantage, including 17 offensive rebounds that produced 16 second-chance points. The Phoenix tallied 13 assists, nine steals, and turned 17 Union Commonwealth turnovers into 22 points, while the bench delivered a strong 31-point performance.

Triston Conger paced the Phoenix with 16 points on 8-of-14 shooting, adding five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Zaylin Rowland matched him with 16 points off the bench, knocking down a three and going 9-for-13 at the stripe, while also swiping four steals. Michael Nwoye recorded another double-double with 11 points, 17 rebounds, three blocks, and a steal. Nick Brunetti provided 11 points and three blocks, Riggs Abner pulled in seven boards with four points, and Antonio Wilkerson added six points and five rebounds.

Union Commonwealth shot 36.5% overall (23-for-63), 22.6% from deep (7-for-31), and 83.3% at the line (10-for-12). The visitors posted 22 points in the paint, 22 off turnovers, and four on the fast break. Dallas Rufus led the Bulldogs with 20 points and three triples, Jabari Covington scored 14 points with two steals, and Devin Dunn added 13 points and six rebounds. Kaleb Hedgepeth tallied 10 points and six boards, while Ali Sakho grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.

The Phoenix improved to 451 on the season after outscoring the visitors 48-28 in the second half. After trailing 35-27 at the break, the Phoenix flipped the momentum coming out of the locker room.

Nick Brunetti came alive after halftime, scoring 11 of his 11 points in the second period, and the Phoenix shot a blistering 56% from the field over the final 20 minutes. Riggs Abner also made an impact off the bench with six rebounds and four points, while the real story of the game came down to an amazing six minute run where the Phoenix didn't allow a single point from the Bulldogs.

Cumberland trailed by as many as 12 early in the second half before a 22-4 run gave them control that they would never give up. The Phoenix led by double digits down the stretch, capped by a Rowland three-pointer that pushed the lead to 18 in the final minute.

The win marks the fourth straight for Cumberland, who will return to action next week looking to extend their early-season momentum against (RV) Georgia Gwinnett in their inaugural season.
