Shires Dominates at Rocky Top Duals, Claims MSC Weekly Honor

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland redshirt junior Sammy Shires was named the Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Week following a dominant showing at the Rocky Top Duals, helping lead No. 10 Cumberland to three convincing team victories on Saturday.

The No. 3-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds went a perfect 3-0 on the day, recording three first-period falls against Rio Grande, Williams Baptist, and Pikeville. Shires opened the event with a pin of Connor Blessing of Rio Grande in 1:42 as Cumberland cruised to a 42-6 win. He followed with a fall over Landon Holmes of Williams Baptist in just 1:36 during a 57-0 shutout, before capping the day by pinning Christian Nesby of Pikeville in 2:06 to help secure a 59-0 victory.

Shires accounted for 18 team points across the three duals. The Clarksville, Tenn., native improved to 10-1 overall and 6-0 in dual competition on the season.

Shires is the third Phoenix to earn the award this season joining Chase Walker and Victor Guzman. This is his first career Wrestler of the Week.
