Tarpley Goes for 20-Point Double-Double as Phoenix Chop Down the Mighty Oaks

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - - The Cumberland women's basketball team controlled the night from the opening tip, blitzing Oakland City with a dominant first quarter and never looking back in a 77-50 road victory.

The Phoenix opened the game on a 16–2 run, held the Mighty Oaks to just one made field goal in the entire first period, and built a 24-7 lead that set the tone for a wire-to-wire performance. That opening quarter saw the Phoenix execute nearly perfect on both ends, shooting over 52% and smothering OCU defensively.

While Oakland City steadied themselves in the second frame, Cumberland still took a 38-22 advantage into halftime as four different players scored six or more points for Cumberland while just one had for the Oaks. CU maintained that dominance and stretched the lead to as many as 29 in the fourth, dominating the glass 52-30 and piling up 22 second-chance points behind relentless offensive rebounding. The Phoenix bench also delivered 21 points as the rotation stayed active throughout the night.

Emaleigh Tarpley powered the attack with a huge second half effort, posting a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds on an efficient 9-for-14 shooting. Ty Buckley added 16 points and 7 boards, knocking down two threes. Sydney Schwallie chipped in 11 points and five assists, connecting on 3-of-4 from deep. Riley Long anchored the paint with 9 rebounds, 6 points, and four steals, while Braley Bushman and Julia Varpness each contributed valuable points off the bench.

Defensively, CU forced 21 turnovers and turned them into 18 points, while holding Oakland City to just 1-of-10 from three and 35.8% shooting overall. With the win, Cumberland improves to 10-2 and continues to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the semester.

Now Cumberland will have a near two-week rest before the Phoenix travel to Marietta, Georgia, to face Life University on December 13.
