Bushman Scores Career-High 28 Points as Phoenix Run Away With 34-Point Win

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - - Cumberland claimed an authoritative second win of the season over Johnson, earning a 95-61.

Cumberland finished the night shooting 54.5 percent from the field and forced 24 turnovers, leading to 23 points off those miscues. Braley Bushman led the way with 28 points and nine rebounds, Tarpley added 24 points on 9-for-11 shooting, and Maddie Brillhart contributed 10 points off the bench.

The Phoenix established their dominance early on and it was their shooting that helped build a double-digit lead in the first quarter. Cumberland held Johnson to just 23.1 percent shooting in the opening period and capitalized on a number of turnovers to take a 22-11 advantage after ten minutes, setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon.

Despite that double-digit gap already, the decisive stretch came in the second quarter, when Cumberland firmly seized control of the contest. The Phoenix erupted for 26 points in the period while shooting 61.1 percent from the field, attacking the basketball and converting more often than not. Emaleigh Tarpley sparked the run with 12 points in the frame on near-perfect shooting, while Ty Buckley and Sydney Schwallie added late buckets that pushed the lead to as many as 21 before halftime. CU remained active on the defensive end as they limited Johnson to just 17 points in the quarter, sending the Phoenix into the break with a commanding 48-28 lead.

Johnson showed brief life coming out of halftime, scoring 20 points in the third quarter, but Cumberland answered every push. Braley Bushman took over offensively in the period, scoring 13 of her game-high 28 points in the third, including a pair of timely three-pointers that kept the margin comfortably in double figures. Cumberland matched Johnson point for point in the quarter and carried a 71-48 advantage into the final period.

The Phoenix closed the game with composure as they have many times this season, outscoring Johnson 24-13 for a 95-61 final score. With the win, the Phoenix wrap up non-conference action with a stout 14-2 record, now awaiting Lindsey Wilson in the conference opener in January.
