Second-Quarter Shift Sends Cumberland to 97-74 Road Loss

COLUMBIA, Ky.--Cumberland opened Mid-South Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Lindsey Wilson, but a strong push by the Blue Raiders late in the second quarter proved decisive in a 97-74 setback at Biggers Sports Center.

Cumberland (14-3, 0-1 MSC) finished the afternoon shooting 42.4 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from three-point range, knocking down five triples in the contest. The Phoenix went 19-of-30 at the free-throw line and totaled 29 rebounds with 12 assists.

Ty Buckley led Cumberland with a team-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds, while Sydney Schwallie followed with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 3-for-4 from three-point range. Emaleigh Tarpley added 14 points and five rebounds, and Braley Bushman chipped in eight points and a team-high seven boards. Maddie Brillhart and Ever Walker each connected from beyond the arc, with Walker finishing with seven points and three assists.

Lindsey Wilson (14-3, 1-1 MSC) shot an efficient 61.3 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc, while also holding a 39-29 edge on the glass. The Blue Raiders moved the ball well throughout the game, recording 22 assists on 38 made field goals, and used a plus-16 bench scoring advantage to help create separation.

The Blue Raiders were paced by Meadow Tisdale, who finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists, while Jarie Thomas added 14 points and three assists. Saniyah Shelton posted a well-rounded performance with 12 points and 11 assists, directing the Blue Raiders' offense throughout the afternoon. Grace Brewer provided a spark off the bench with 13 points, and Amelia Hodges and Claire Fleming each reached double figures as Lindsey Wilson placed six players in double-digit scoring.

The Phoenix battled early and showed composure offensively in the opening quarter, getting to the free-throw line to stay within striking distance. Ty Buckley scored eight of her team-high 18 points in the first period, helping Cumberland trim an early deficit to 16-14 at the end of one.

Cumberland continued to find success offensively in the second quarter, shooting 58.3 percent from the floor and briefly cutting the margin to five midway through the period. Buckley and Emaleigh Tarpley consistently attacked the paint, while Sydney Schwallie provided a spark from the perimeter. However, foul trouble began to mount late in the half, forcing Cumberland into extended minutes on the defensive end and sending Lindsey Wilson to the free-throw line. The Blue Raiders capitalized, closing the half on a run to take a 42-32 advantage into the break.

Lindsey Wilson carried that momentum into the third quarter, shooting over 70 percent from the field in the period to stretch the lead to 68-47. Cumberland continued to compete, with Schwallie knocking down a pair of three-pointers and Tarpley scoring inside, but the Blue Raiders' ball movement and efficiency proved difficult to slow.

The Phoenix showed resilience in the fourth quarter, scoring 27 points and shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc. Schwallie capped her afternoon with a late layup, while Ever Walker and Maddie Brillhart connected from long range. Despite the offensive surge, Lindsey Wilson maintained control and even outpaced CU in the fourth with 29 points.

Cumberland will look to regroup as conference play continues next week traveling on the road at the University of the Cumberlands as well as Georgetown next Thursday and Saturday.
