No. 7 Georgetown uses Big Fourth Quarter to Down the Phoenix

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland women's basketball played seventh-ranked Georgetown tight until the Tigers had a big fourth quarter to pull away with a 78-52 win.

Cumberland (8-16, 0-9 MSC) struggled offensively, shooting just 31.3% from the field in a 52-point effort. Kayla Gordon led the Phoenix with 12 points, going 5-for-14 from the floor. Myajae Eubanks followed with nine points on an efficient 4-for-5 shooting, while Ever Walker added eight points and knocked down two three-pointers. Emaleigh Tarpley contributed across the board with six points, five rebounds, and a team-high four assists and four steals. Faith Colston matched Tarpley with six points and grabbed five rebounds.

Cumberland shot 27.8% from three but capitalized at the free-throw line, hitting 87.5% of their attempts. Defensively, the Phoenix recorded 10 steals but were hampered by 25 turnovers in the contest.

Georgetown (19-5, 5-4 MSC) put together an efficient offensive performance, shooting 49.2% from the field on their way to a 78-point outing. Teionni McDaniel and Abby Varney led the Tigers with 17 points apiece, with McDaniel adding four assists and three steals, while Varney went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Izzy Lamparty controlled the paint, recording a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophie Smith also made a strong impact on the boards, securing 11 rebounds to go along with six points.

Georgetown dominated inside, out-rebounding Cumberland 50-27 and scoring efficiently in the fourth quarter, where they posted 30 points on 55.6% shooting. The Tigers also capitalized at the free-throw line, knocking down 14-of-20 attempts while forcing 25 turnovers on the defensive end.

Both sides played to a 5-5 tie early on, but the Tigers created some separation with a 6-0 run on three layups in the lane. Walker drilled a triple, but Georgetown answered with a Klock jumper to get us to our first stoppage down 13-8 with four minutes left in the first.

Out of the timeout, Tarpley hit a jumper for CU, but again the Tigers went on a 6-0 run to push the lead to nine. With one second left in the quarter, Eubanks hit one-of-two free throws to trail 19-11 after the first quarter.

Cumberland started the second on a 4-0 spurt as Eubanks hit a two and Maddie Brillhart knocked down two free throws. Varner got Georgetown going in the quarter with an and-one conversion. Colston drilled a triple, but the Tigers scored the next six points to get a double-figure lead. Georgetown led 32-20 at the media timeout.

The Phoenix came out the stoppage on a run. Eubanks made back-to-back layups and Colston hit her second three of the game to go on a 7-3 run to get it to 35-27. Georgetown would score the final three points of the half to go up 38-27.

Kayla Gordon got going to start the second half to spark an 8-3 Phoenix run. After a jumper from Smith, Gordon and Harris scored in the lane to cut it to a four-point game trailing just 43-39 at the third quarter media.

The Tiger knocked down a three and jumper while Gordon hit two free throws to get us to the fourth trailing 48-41.

Anna Long drained a three for Georgetown to spark a quick 5-0 run forcing the Phoenix into a timeout down 12, 53-41.

The Tigers continued the run turning it into a 12-0 run to take over in the fourth quarter. Georgetown pushed the run out to outscore Cumberland 30-to-11 in the fourth and run away with a 78-52 win.

Cumberland will turn around and play in Henderson on Thursday against eighth-ranked Freed-Hardeman. Jon Boyce will be on the call for Cumberland with the Cumberland Sports Network.
