Phoenix Hold Off Late Rally to Upset No. 3 Georgetown

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland men's basketball pulled off a stunning upset on Saturday, taking down No. 3 Georgetown in a thrilling 92-89 victory at the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena. The Phoenix came out firing, building a commanding first-half lead behind red-hot shooting and clutch performances from Demarius Boyd and Jalen Anglin. Despite a furious comeback attempt by the Tigers, Cumberland held strong in the final minutes to secure its second Top 5 win in the last two weeks.

Cumberland (12-12, 5-4 MSC) pulled off a massive upset, taking down No. 3 Georgetown in a thrilling 92-89 victory behind a dominant offensive performance. The win marks Cumberland's second win over a Top 5 team in the last two weeks as CU defeated No. 1 Freed-Hardeman on January 30.

Demarius Boyd and Jalen Anglin led the charge with 27 points each, with Boyd shooting 12-of-20 from the field while adding four assists and three steals. Anglin was highly efficient, going 9-of-12 from the floor and knocking down all six of his free-throw attempts.

Triston Conger fought foul trouble, missing most of the second half, contributing 12 points and six rebounds. Keyshawn Robinson was active on the boards, grabbing a team-high seven rebounds along with seven points.

The Phoenix shot an impressive 53.7% from the field, including a scorching 57.5% in the first half to build a lead. Cumberland also capitalized at the free-throw line, hitting 15-of-19 attempts, and limited turnovers to just eight while securing the statement victory.

No. 3 Georgetown (23-2, 7-2 MSC) fell in a hard-fought game despite a strong offensive showing. Jaquias Franklin led the Tigers with 37 points, shooting 12-of-21 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. Andres Burney controlled the paint with 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while Jabrion Spikes contributed 13 points and nine rebounds.

Georgetown shot an efficient 48.4% from the field and an impressive 90.5% from the free-throw line, but their 13 turnovers and Cumberland's hot start proved costly. The Tigers fought back in the second half, shooting 54.8% from the floor and cutting into the deficit and having a chance to tie and take the lead late in the game, but ultimately fell to the Phoenix.

Boyd got going early for the Phoenix scoring the first two baskets of the game. Georgetown responded with a jumper and a three-ball for a brief lead, but CU went on a 7-0 spurt with a triple from Anglin, a two from Robinson, and two free throws from Conger for a 11-5 lead. After a basket from Georgetown, Cumberland continued the run to push it out to 12-2 as Anglin hit a jumper and three from the corner leading CU into a timeout up 16-7 with 14 minutes left in the first.

After a layup from Robinson and a free throw to push the lead to 19-9, Boyd and Riggs Abner each added layups to keep the Phoenix in control. Anglin extended the lead with a jumper, and Conger converted back-to-back layups, giving Cumberland a 27-18 advantage. Georgetown responded briefly with free throws from Franklin, but Cumberland stayed hot as Abner and Conger connected again inside, capping off a 9-2 run to make it 31-20.

Georgetown fought back midway through the half, sparked by a thunderous dunk from Andres Burney and a three-pointer from Gavin Stevens, cutting the deficit to 31-23. Cumberland answered immediately as Anglin drained a three-pointer, followed by a layup from Franklin to keep the Tigers in reach at 34-25. The Phoenix, however, continued their offensive assault, as Conger and Boyd each hit jumpers, pushing the lead to 38-27. Georgetown managed to trim the deficit again with a pair of free throws from Franklin, but Cumberland kept control behind strong inside play from Boyd and Martin, extending their lead to 47-38 with just over three minutes left in the half.

Closing out the first half, Cumberland went on another run, capitalizing on their defensive stops. Ahqzeea Martin converted two consecutive layups, and Boyd added another to stretch the lead to 51-38. Georgetown's Darien Lewis managed to get to the line for a pair of free throws, but Joshua Johnson responded with a three-pointer, keeping the momentum in Cumberland's favor. Despite Franklin answering with a three of his own, Cumberland finished strong, as Boyd hit a jumper in the final minutes, sending the Phoenix into the locker room with a commanding 53-40 lead.

Conger got things going for Cumberland in the second with a layup off an assist from Matthew Stokes, putting the Phoenix up 55-42. Anglin followed with another layup, and Boyd hit a jumper to push the lead to 59-42. Georgetown tried to respond, with Hunter McCutcheon knocking down a three-pointer, but Boyd answered with another layup to keep the Phoenix in control.

Midway through the half, Cumberland continued to extend its lead, with Robinson hitting a pair of free throws and Anglin connecting on a jumper to make it 65-52. Georgetown, however, began to find its rhythm, as McCutcheon and Andres Burney scored back-to-back baskets to trim the deficit.

With ten minutes remaining, Cumberland held a 70-59 lead following a layup from Martin, but Georgetown began to chip away. Franklin and Scotty Browning knocked down free throws, and Franklin added a jumper to bring the Tigers within single digits. Boyd and Anglin provided timely buckets for Cumberland, but Georgetown's Franklin stayed hot, hitting a layup and free throws to make it a six-point game with just under eight minutes left.

As the clock ticked under five minutes, Cumberland led 84-74 after a Boyd jumper, but Franklin continued to carry Georgetown, drilling a deep three to cut the lead to seven. Anglin came up big in the clutch, driving for a layup and then adding free throws to keep the Phoenix ahead, but Franklin struck again with another three-pointer to bring the Tigers within a point at 88-87 with 1:27 to go.

With the game on the line, Anglin delivered at the free-throw line, hitting four clutch shots in the final minute to give Cumberland a 92-89 lead. Burney answered with a layup for Georgetown, but with only four seconds remaining, Anglin sealed the game with his final free throw. Georgetown had a chance to tie it, but their triple missed giving possession back to Cumberland with 0.9 seconds left. However, a turnover by the Phoenix left Georgetown with the ball with no time running off. The Tigers inbounded it and again fired another three that clanked off the backboard for Cumberland to stave off the comeback and get the win over No. 3, 92-89.

Cumberland will look to back it up as they travel to Henderson to take on No. 1 Freed-Hardeman on Thursday.
