Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Indiana Tech

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Indiana Tech in Bounce Back Game Two Win

Game one of the doubleheader against Indiana Tech started with Justin Goldstein striking out two of the first three batters he faced in a three up, three down inning. 

Drew Dalton-Akiwumi started the Phoenix with a base hit through the right side and then CU was doubled up on a shallow fly ball to end the inning. In the second inning, Goldstein gave up a single and then struck another Warrior batter out and then gave up the lead with a two-run homer. 

After a quick third inning, Indiana Tech had a huge top of the fourth with four hits and four runs scored to extend their lead 6-0 on six hits. In the top of the fifth inning, Indiana Tech started the inning with a walk and a single to have runners on first and second. A passed ball advanced both runners to second and third. A sacrifice fly scored one run and a single to left center scored the second run. 

Aiden McDonald started out the fifth inning for the Phoenix with a left field single. Drew Dalton-Akiwumi doubled down the left field line to advance McDonald to third. Trent Duchshere recorded a ground out RBI. The Phoenix scored a run on two hits and left one on base. 

The sixth inning was three up, three down for both teams. The top of the seventh Indiana Tech recorded a double and a single but left them both stranded to end the inning. Cohl Proctor recorded a double and immediately after Proctor's double, Duchshere hit a two run homer into deep left center. 

The Phoenix dropped game one of the doubleheader 8-3 on six hits. Justin Goldstein gave up six runs but struck out six batters early in the game. Marcelo Saldana gave up four hits, two runs, and struck out two batters in three innings pitched. 

Game two of the double header was three batters and three outs for the Phoenix defense in the top of the first inning. CU started the inning with a lead off walk and then a throwing error and a passed ball by the catcher to advance Akiwumi to third base. Preston Welchel grounded out to second base to record the first run of the game with a 1-0 lead over the Warriors. Wilser Then singled to left field and then advanced to second on another passed ball and shortly after, Cohl Proctor singled up the middle to score Wilser. Duchshere doubled to right field advancing Proctor to third. The Phoenix left three stranded and scored two runs on three hits. 

In the bottom of the second, Hunter Moser singled on a bunt to third base which was followed by an error and a Dylan LaRue single through the right side. The hit by LaRue resulted in an RBI with Moser scoring. This extended the Phoenix lead to 3-0. 

In the fourth inning, Moser continued to reach base as he walked and stole second but made it to third base on a throwing error by the catcher. Akiwumi singled up the middle to pick up another RBI for the Phoenix. The Phoenix recorded a run on one hit and an error by Indiana Tech. 

In the sixth inning, Indiana Tech started the inning with a homer by Huerta but only came away with one run to keep the Phoenix in the lead 4-1. The Phoenix finished the top of the seventh only giving up one hit and secured the victory of game two by a score of 4-1. 

Cumberland's pitching was phenomenal as Quinlan Wiley threw five innings only giving up three hits, walking none, and striking out nine batters. 

Drew Dalton-Akiwumi, Dylan LaRue, Preston Welchel, and Cohl Proctor all contributed with an RBI to secure the win against Indiana Tech. 

The Phoenix are back in action Tuesday, February 18th in Pulaski, Tenn. against UT Southern at 3:00 PM.
