Cumberland Prevails Despite Late Drama in 12-8 Extra-Inning Victory

PULASKI, Tenn.--Brady Buckner hit a two-out three run home run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings for Tennessee Southern, but Cumberland scored four in the 10th inning to come away with 12-8 win in their first away game of the season.

Cumberland (7-3-1) pounded out 12 runs in the win with 16 hits, Aqbut could have done a lot more damage leaving 16 runners on base. The Phoenix relief pitching was good in this game as Jake Green, Lincoln Juarez, Kyle Nyblod, and Will Graves  each threw scoreless innings.

Wilser Then racked up three hits and a bomb with three RBIs. Preston Welchel and Dylan LaRue each had three hits. Hunter Moser provided a huge spark for CU entering late in the game and hitting a three-run single in the 10th. Drew Dalton-Akiwumi collected two hits and a home run.

The Phoenix took advantage of a few walks and a hit by pitch in the first. Dalton-Akiwumu ended up scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Kuriya for a 1-0 lead.

Logan Baskin made his first start of the season on the hill and ran into trouble. After a single and a hit by pitch, Mason Billions hit a three run home run with two outs for a 3-1 Firehawks lead.

Cumberland responded in the second inning to tie the game. Garcia drew a lead off walk and Dalton-Akiwumi ripped a two-run homer. The Firehawks used the long ball again to retake the lead as the designated hitter Cole Barnett led off the inning with a solo bomb. After the homer, the Firehawks manufactured a run after a single and a walk. Tennessee Southern bunted both runners over before plating one run on a groundout for a 5-3 score through two.

The Phoenix had chances in the fourth and fifth, but couldn't get the timely hit they needed stranding the bases loaded in both innings. Jake Green tossed scoreless frames to keep the game at 5-3.

Cumberland got a spark from Hunter Moser in the sixth. Moser led off the inning with a single and Welchel followed with a double to right. Then singled home Moser and LaRue singled home Welchel to tie the game. Two batters later, the Phoenix took the lead on a bases-loaded walk to Trenton Duchsherer for a 6-5 lead.

In the seventh, Dalton-Akiwumi reached on a hit by pitch and later came in to score on a two-run moonshot from Then, his second home run of the season to extend the lead to 8-5. Kyle Nyblod tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth inning to pass it off up by three.

The Firehawks led off the ninth with a single, but a doubleplay erased both runners. With one out to play with, Tennessee Southern rattled off back-to-back singles and then a three-run home run from Brayden Buckner tied the game sending us to extra innings.

Cumberland got it going as Kuriya and Duchsherer got on with a hit by pitch and a walk. Garcia laid done a sacrifice bunt, but the Firehawks threw the ball away allowing Kuriya to score. Later, Moser delivered a three-run single as he hit the ball in the right-center gap for the insurance Cumberland needed.

Will Graves threw the 10th inning. The Firehawks made it interesting as they loaded the bases, but Graves induced a game-ending pop up to get the win.

The Phoenix will be in action for a three-game set this Saturday and Sunday at Spartanburg Methodist in South Carolina.
